  • Can I swap the timing cover from a fwd 3.1/2.8 onto a fiero

I have an '88 fiero with a 2.8. I would like to swap the timing cover and accessories from a fwd 2.8/3.1 onto my fiero engine. I think I would derive the following benefits:
1] More clearnce at front of engine.
2] I could use the V-5 compressor instead of the DA-6
3] It is a full serpentine setup. The Fiero's current setup requires me to constantly tension the belts.
I realize I would have to work something out cocerning alternator placement

So I guess this boils down to:
4] Will the new timing cover bolt up?
5] Can I exchange the Fiero's balancer and crank pulley for the 3.1's
6] Will the bracket that holds the rear of the V-5 compressor to the block, bolt to the fiero's block?

I believe there is a bypass hole that wil have to be plugged, below the right side water port (from the water pump). The genII doesn't use this bypass, I know other genI engines do, and believe the Fiero is the same.
There is a port above the water pump, that is routed to behind the T-stat on teh GneII, and would be ideal to do the same with your swap.

I do not understand. Are the ports on the block or on the Timing cover?

Sorry the port that needs to be blocked is on the block itself.

          0-timing-0
          ....gear..o

Kinda like that ^^^^ the 0= water ports from the water pump/front cover, the o = the port that needs to be blocked. The genII front cover does not cover that lower port, and will be a major leak. timing gear = where the cam gear is.

there is a port directly above the water pump (part of the timing cover) that is used for the bypass, which is what needs to be redirected to under the T-stat.
