3400 TOG headers on a 3100 w-body

Now you guys are saying that s&s headers fit this 3100 which means that they fit a 3.1 gen2. So the ports on the header aren't "D" shaped but round and I could put a set on my 3.1 with a 4t60 trans? I ported the crap out of my exhaust manifolds hoping for a little emph but it proved to be a waste of time. I would like a set of headers for my ride. Do you guys have a part# if they do fit a 3.1I\'d rather push a CHEVY than drive a Ford!

The rear header will not fit at all in the engine bay first of all. It will need to be modified,
The front like we have been discussing may or may not fit around the trans properly.
The problem that you just gave yourself by ordering the coated ones is that now your going to have to cut the rear and modify it and the coating will have to be removed at the areas to weld and modify the pipes to fit. Which makes the Coated ones a moot point. Brad, Chris and myself all ordered uncoated years back when they first came out since we knew we'd be cutting the shit out of them. You can get them coated afterwards once they'd be ready to bolt in and are a dropin fitment..Colin

But technically they bolt up and fit on the Gen3 "D" shape and Gen2 "O" port heads, Yes.Colin

You're right Colin. I guess I didn't think this one through enough. Usually I really take my time researching
The ceramic coating removing never came to mind. hmm. Well if you get a chance, read that wbody link above. It is a guy with a 95 monte carlo with a 3400 and the 4t60e with ssheaders(Manitcor). he says he had no prob around the trans. But never said much about the rear firewall. If you notice i asked him about the rear firewall today. He will reply by tomorrow. I still have 10 days to call up ssheaders and change my order to non ceramic coated.
On page 1 of that thread, he said,"I know S&S headers will work, TOGs are much shorter so you should be able to make them work as well. You will most likely end up cutting the rear flange off and welding your custom DP directly to the rear header.
Done correctly your clearance will be VERY tight. However they will fit without modification to the engine bay (thank the 60 degree engine for that on the 90s you have to mod the firewall).
When I shift into reverse the headers will vibrate aginst the firewall. Other than that they have no problems at all and make no nosie other than making the exhaust sound mean as hell in forward gears.
I would go for the S&S personally because with the longer primaries you have less chance of your weld braking for your downpope. As a matter of fact you dont need a downpipe with the S&S headers.
How is ceramic layed over the headers??? is it kinda like saran rap? Just something that is rapped around the headers?? I'm not worried about the transmission. I talked to gpxsss(Chris) about getting around the transmission and to my luck, manticor said the same thing over at wbody. That I can get by the tranny with no cutting. So that leaves the firewall. IIRC I think manitcor over at wbody said he was really close with the firewall. So i asked him again today just to clear any confusion. But Chris said otherwise. Lots of haking. ack.
If i'm only modifing the rear of the headers, i think i will keep my order as ceramic. I could be wrong by doing this. I will understand better once i know how the ceramic stuff is layed on the headers.

the ceramic coating is sprayed onto the headers, then baked in an oven to heat cure it onto the headers. its actualy a simular proccess to powder coating.
if you have to mod the headers to fit, you will have to grind the coating off were you have to weld. if its a spot that you wont see, you can just paint ovber were you had to weld with high heat ceramic paint, but it wont have the effect that the ceramic coating does.

You've been the biggest help. But just for the record, Did you modify the rear to fit the firewall. IIRC u said that i Might have to?
And when u get a chance to take pictures of your headers, can you try to get a pic of the front, side, and by the firewall pls. Thanks.
Yeah sorry about that, forgot to do it last night. No modification to the rear firewall is neccassary. You will need to modify the rear header though.
The flange at the bottom where the headers meet the exhaust system will need to be cut off before tying to install the rear header. Make sure you go to a good exhaust shop or you know a badass welder to hook the headers to the exhaust as the weld is diffcult to do due to clearance.
Remeber the rear header goes in from the top. Line it up on the studs as best as possible then then put the nuts on and draw the header up a bit once you have all the nuts on 3 turns or so start on the front header, get it lined up and the bolts just started but make sure everything is loose enough to give you some play.
Then putthe doughnut in and connect the rear header to the front get the bolts started on the flange connected to the headers.
After that work your way around the engine a few turns on each bolt first the rear then the front then the flange. This process will take a couple hours but its the best way to ensure things line up as best as possible.
Remove your alternator, take your PS pump off and move it out of the way too. This will give you alot more room to work on the rear header.

Did Chris (GPXSS) ever get his S&S's to fit around his 4T60? Or was there no issues with them in that regards?
The 4T40/45 style trans's drop signifigantly off from where the bellhousing mates up and does a sharp angle \ Down to the case which is how and why these headers are routed.
The guy with the Beretta 5spd and TOG's had to modify both front and rear headers as well, as again they were designed around the GAGT 4T45E.
Colin, any idea if the headers will make it around the Isuzu MK7? That's the 2.2OHV tranny, which is what I'm running. I'm assuming that it's probably smaller like the 4t40/45's are.97 Cavalier RS

The Isuzu is still going to have fitment issues with the headers. Try it, but I have my doubts as the trans is still pretty bulky in the area where the 4t4XE's drop down.Colin
