  • 3400 Build up

    I want 300+ horse out of a 99-up 3400 engine .
I have a 96 grand am with 3100. i want to get a 3400 engine (it will fit) bore it out to 3.5 and get ross pistons, ported intake manifold, ported polished heads, cams ,valves ,headers, throttle body, conecting rods, and crank shafts.
After that get it put on the engine dyno and blue printed and balanced.

Does any one have any sugestions on where i can get the parts i want?
i was thinking GMperformance 60 degree parts but i dont know if they would even fit a new 3400 engine?

Also after i get a built engine i want to get a vortech supercharger from RSM racing, and run 400 or so HP so i cant have to mutch compression and everything has to built for boost about 10psi or less.

Money is not a option/ i wont buy at high price part for minimal performance when there is one for half the price for 2-3 HP less

Umm... I'm sure it was just a misprint, but these engines and single cam and single crank.... and you have to balance and blueprint an engine prior to putting it on a dyno.

Yes they would fit, considering they are what is already on the 3100 and 3400. Well, actually, GM Perf heads are the 3100 heads, so the valve size would be smaller than stock 3400 heads.

Get custom billet cam and crank from Crower, forged rods from Crower... or better yet, just goto the member's rides area and check out the engine for the hydroplane. Copy that engine and then you'll have a nice engine, since money is no object.

thanks, i wasnt thinking last night and put s on everything.
i will have it balanced and blue printed before the dyno.
thanks for the info on the heads i didnt hear or know any thing about them.
and cower is a good company to go with?

wont gmperformance crank work or is it just for the 3100 and wont be as good?

The GM Performance crank is just a stock crank.

all GMPP stuff save for a few cams and a few valve springs are all stock components.

actually one or two of the performance Flat tappet cams are from crane made for gm.

but there is not a gm performance "performance" roller cam for the 3X00 engines.

Where did you get all of your parts cam, crank shaft, heads, pistons, rods?

www.Doctorspeed.com has a ported and polished intake manifold and heads. what do you think of them?

He has a 3.1L bottom end with a 3x00 top end, so parts are easier to find. The crank is stock (everyone on here uses a stock crank).

my build is completely stock save for the Comp cams camshaft and roller tip rockers

cheap .030 pistons, stock rods, stock crank, stock block, 3100 heads, 3100 lower intake (00 style) 3400 upper, and a 2.3L quad4 throttle body. oh and stock 3400 exhuast manifolds. parts have been ported but other than that. she's all stock GM.

Did I see that you're running 10.5 to 1 compression? How much did you take off the heads to achieve that and do you still run on pump gas? How much extra power do you think you got from this modification? Thanks!

the heads were shaved .020 and i put in a set of the thinner 2.8/3.1L Iron head gaskets, .040 thick compared to .060,...

that was the old setup, im running a little over 11:1 now.

on your 3100 or 3400 you cant do the Iron head gasket trick, due to the pistons stick out of the GEN3 blocks above the deck by about .020 -.022 inches.
where as my GEN2 block has the pistons a hair in the deck.
what im getting at is with .040 thick gaskets, and pistons that are already .020 above the deck, you only have a safety margin of .020 between the head and the piston, which at engine revs will result in "piston kiss" piston hitting the head.

i still run on pump gas, yes.

as to the HP of the engine, its about 190 Crank HP.. or thereabouts. i did a untuned dyno of the car. with the car running about 9:1 a/f ratio and the heat of the 35Celcius day, a timing chain that was streched beyond belief, it put down 161.6 hp at the wheels...
