  • do i have Gen 2 or 3 heads ?

    hello all

    quick question

i cant seem to find the post of what years where what generation topend

i have a 1993 Grand Prix 3.1L and would like to swap the newer topend (heads, intake, ect..) onto a 1988 2.8L block that i had rebuilt last year
i remember the Gen3 topends had the better flow but im just not sure what can be swapped over and what kind of things i should look out for
botht he 2.8 and 3.1 have aluminum heads and the intakes look simmilar on the outside.

most of the improvment is in the heads (combustion chamber shape)?

    thanks in advance

RE: do i have Gen 2 or 3 heads ?

The 3.1L is a GenII. The Gen III is the 3100/3400. The best flowing heads will be 3400 or 00+ 3100 heads due to the larger intake valve. Main differences between the Gen II and Gen III heads is the port locations, port size, and in later years, the addition of roller rockers.

so swapping a gen3 setup onto the 2.8 L block into my 1993 grand prix wouldnt be a problem ?

cams is pretty big, and if i find my 1.6 roller tips that are hiding somewhere:P i think id have a lift of 469/469

too much for the 1993 computer ?

Just to clarify your '93 3.1 is a genII which in stock trim is the same as your 2.8 top end, so swapping the 3.1 genII top end onto your 2.8, will do nothing to improve performance.

If you want some hybrid infor for the 31/400 top end swap onto a genII block, go to www.domesticcrew.com

Sounds like you are using the Comp cams 260 duration .440 lift cam.

I had this same cam with 1.6's as well for the .469 inch lift. Runs fine on the stock eprom and ecm. You have no worries there.
