  • How much advance is best? for the 2.8

I am running a 2.8 overbored .050 with a Holley2300/Edelbrock carb setup and a vacuum advance distributor. The distributor was re-curved by the speed shop to advance 26* and give it 36* overall advance WOT when initial advance is set at 10*.

This is engine is punched out, ported, polished, GM HO cam, with a 2.5" exhaust.

I've been trying 0*, 10*, 11* and even 12*. I can't figure out the best setting. With full, ungated vacuum at 10* initial advance, it will give me the 36* WOT but more like 16*-18* at idle.

Has anybody experimented with this stuff? Any good advice?

Go as much as you can until it pings during driving and then back it off 2*

Changing to higher octane gas will allow for more and more timing.

i am running 14 * initial, 38* total with my stock efi motor. i dont get any ping.

just try throwing some timing at it and play with it some more. if it pings, back it off.
