  • head bolt/stud options for 3400

So I found an arp stud kit for the older engines but can find nothing for the gen 3 motors. Is there actually anything out there aside from the stock TTY bolts that came with this thing? Part numbers and links are more than welcome.

RE: head bolt/stud options for 3400

When I ordered my ARP studs several year sago, there was no kit available for the aluminum head engines, so I had to buy everything seperately. Last year someone posted that there was now a kit for this, but I never saw a number or price on it. Try a search for ARP and see if it comes up.

If arp has a kit for us, it sure isn't on their site. I'm going to try to find the individual bolts they have, but all I could find was m10 bolts and we need m11.

i found this on the site:

        Bolts/Studs

All part numbers listed below are ARP part numbers. only the kit numbers are part numbers are from ARP, the rest of the info is from personal experience with the following parts.

Here's is the stud info for the Gen II and Gen III aluminum heads.

        8 - Undercut Long studs (11mm x 1.5 & 7/16" - 20) - ATP5.4LU
        8 - Undercut Short studs (11mm x 1.5 & 7/16" - 20) - ATP4.650LU
        16 - Hex Nuts (7/16" - 20) - APN58 or 12 point nuts (7/16" - 20) - APN12-1
        16 - Washers (7/16" ID 13/16 OD) - APW1316N

These studs are under cut, which means that the OD diameter of the shaft is less then the OD of the threads. This actually makes the stud stronger because the OD of the stud is the same the entire length of the stud, instead of being necked down at the threads.

          Thanks for the information.

I notice the kit on the arp site says it's for the 2.8L engine but is 11mm bolts...wasn't the 2.8L on the standard system though?

no it was intro'd as a metric engine. Designed and bult in mm's, my gen 1 iron head is all metric. if you look around you'll notice that most references are in mm's for these motors. bore, stroke, block measurements, etc... but for some reason not valves. the gm power book even states it as such.

Yeah, there isn't an actual kit for the gen3 engine, but the parts are available. Those are the right ones. Several of us have got them for our 3400's now. Brad had the part numbers posted somewhere on the front page IIRC. You can order them all from summit too, here's what you need...

              ARP-300-8333 (quantity 2), for the 12pt nuts
ARP-200-8530 (qty 2), those are the 7/16 washers
              ARP-ATP54LU (qty 8 ), replacement corner stud
              ARP-ATP46501LUB (qty 8 ), single stud

That will get you everything to do both heads. Total will be about $220 with shipping.

That's not the most up-to-date part numbers. I really need to update the site! Lemme find them for you really quick...

long stud (11x1.5mm bottom threads w/ 7/16"x20 top threads)- ATP5.400-1LUB
                short stud (11x1.5mm bottom w/ 7/16x20 top)- ATP4.650-1LUB
                12point nut (7/16x20 thread)- 300-8333
                washer (7/16 I.D.- 13/16 O.D.)- 200-8530

The lady at ARP told me if you call summit racing and give them those ARP part numbers that they will be able to order you exactly what you need.

Doh! didn't know that would do that if I put an 8 and ) together, lol. Fixed...

Brad, did ARP just change the part numbers and they are the same parts, or are those the wrong parts? I haven't actually installed mine yet (waiting for the cam) but when I called ARP that was what they told me I needed. I thought those were the same part numbers you had listed on the site too when I ordered them from summit? They are still the same parts on summit anyway. I just hope they are the right parts. I gave those numbers to Schweppe over on gagt.com also because he wanted them after he blew his head gaskets on the dyno. He buttoned the engine up already because he ran it at MGM last weekend, but I don't know if he had those studs on there yet or used stock bolts.

I figured they were new PNs when you did your research. Ok, so maybe they are the same PN.

                        Geez, I'm so confused...

lol, well... I guess I'll see if everything works right when I install them. I've compared them to some stock head bolts I have lying around though and they look like they are the right length...

I have arp head bolts on my hybrid. I ended up buying 2 kits and piecing them together. One was for a 2.8 iron head, and the other was for a honda engine. Not the most economical route to go. I have heard jbodyperformance.com has a arp head kit now (maybe they custom order them themselves). Worth checking out.
