all literature I have says the beretta had a 3.1 crank. I have pics of where the block was notched for the extra clearencing of the rod throws as well.

SOmeone show me where it was stated a custom crank was used. If thats the case then custom lenght rods would have also had to been used, and I dont' have any literature that says this either.

Gen 3 pan wont' fit. Bowtie has the earlier style bolt pattern.

If you READ the post it says I am using a CUSTOM FORGED! crank for the boost. And I know the gen 3 pan doesn't fit thats why I and looking at the pan for the 91 turbo grand prix. Here is a better picture of the block by the way.

It is good to see people are still getting use out of my scanned-in images of the Pace Car Hot Rod article.

yea you might have a forged crank but I was talking about when you said that you forgot that the beretta motor had a "custom crank".

Thats untrue. it used a stock 3.31 stroke crank. There was nothing custom about it.

BSzopi it did not have a custom stroke crank as stated in that article in hot rod. it used a stock crank.

It was bored to 92mm to get it to a 3.4 provign that the al block can be made to 3.4 liters.

elite... pay no attention to this guy... he just likes picking fights for no reason to prove he has a small penis.

I still don't see the wisdom in messing with this block. As doubt incarnate said, you can have a completely built and running engine (and probably a turbo too) compared to just that $4000 block. It was designed to run 2.8L gear, so it still requires custom machining to use 3.1/3.4L stuff. And according to GMP it's only safe to bore it to 91mm... so they either resleaved it, or ignored their own advice and didn't care about cylinder bore distortion. GM can do that since they have money and don't care if they blow up the car. I wouldn't want to overbore it that much if you planned on running boost (which elite is planning to do).

That's my 2 cents and I'm done with this thread. No point in arguing it anymore...

shaun is actually talking about the article referencing the bowtie in the pacecar berreta, not your build. and not the "indy" berreta's either. the indy berreta was a dressed gt, just little prettier, not faster. it didnt have any more than the stock everyday 3.1. and the actual pacecar was a pretty warmed over bowtie peice. if i remember correctly it had custom forged pistons of 10.4:1cr. a cam and probably the only headers gm made for these fwd motors. not to mention the one and only 'vette style intake manifold they made for it.

As for it only being able to be bored out to 91mm safely I just assumbed that 92mm would be the absolute most you could go considering it was done with the original indy block. Maybe I'll shot GM an email and ask them about clearencing for the crankshaft. Worst case scenerario would be to go with a new crank from a 2.8 I suppose.
this is where you said the beretta used a custom crank. Right there.

that is what I was posting about. why dont' you remember what you yourself typed?

I'm sure GM didn't have a problem boring it to 92mm for the short duration that it was used. I'm sure they did their research and only recommend 91mm as the max because people who buy it are going to stress it more than they did.

Also to add a bit. I found that for a chunk of change the sleeve sizes can be increased but due to the fact that they are stepped it is very expensive and not worth the hp gain. Also in the article it does say they used an extra hardened crankshaft cross drilled main bearing journals for better oiling.
