For the top end swap, why do you have to use the newer PS pump, assuming you dont mod the Gen2 front cover? Reason im asking is it seems to be a pain to remove the front cover since the seal and pan are attached. Thanks

The mounting surface was changed for the genIII, it was made thinner. The genIII front cover keeps the pulleys in alignment.

You may have better luck, but for me, it was a disaster. Never again.1995 Grand Am GT

the '86 z's have a power steering pump without a resivior, you can just mount a resivior remotley, all youd have to do is tap the hole where the resivior feeds the pump and put a line in, mount a resivior on the firewall or other sutibal location. If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

On those Z's, how low is the reservoir located in relation to the pump? If its only the reservoir that hits the intake, then i dont see why remotly locating the reservoir wouldnt work. I could just use my Gen2 cover and pump, although i think it'd look a bit weird having a bare pump.

the resivior is located on the fire wall about level with the pump, or maybe higher, i'll get a pic up on thursday. i just took the res off a 91 pump for a W car, its not too goofy lookin, just needs cleaned up. you wil have to tap the hole for a line, or get a pump for an 86 J with a fitting in it,you'll have to figure out lines too, you could use the resivior from an 86 to, you just need to sit down and look at the stuff for a while and see where things would fit and stuff. If you aren't friends with a liar, you aren't friends with anyone.

The Gen 2 pump and the Gen 3 pump ARE in fact identical. The reservoirs DO interchange. There's just 2 clips that hold the reservoir to the pump, then the reservoir just pops off.. done this at work many times..
