  • Simple Gen3 swap question.

For the top end swap, why do you have to use the newer PS pump, assuming you dont mod the Gen2 front cover? Reason im asking is it seems to be a pain to remove the front cover since the seal and pan are attached. Thanks

Resivoir will hit the manifold. You must get a new pump but do not need to remove the front cover.

Actually you do need to remove the front cover, to replace it with the genIII front cover.

The mounting surface was changed for the genIII, it was made thinner. The genIII front cover keeps the pulleys in alignment.

Does the pan really need to be dropped or can the cover just be unbolted and slid out?

I left on when I changed my cover. BAD IDEA!! It leaked oil every where!!

You may have better luck, but for me, it was a disaster. Never again.

The pump itself is actually the same on all of them, you can just change the reservoir if you want to save a few bucks.

Spending the money is not as much of an issue as removing the cover. Will a Gen 3 reservoir go right on a gen2s?

I thought the offset of the pulley was different too?

the '86 z's have a power steering pump without a resivior, you can just mount a resivior remotley, all youd have to do is tap the hole where the resivior feeds the pump and put a line in, mount a resivior on the firewall or other sutibal location.

On those Z's, how low is the reservoir located in relation to the pump? If its only the reservoir that hits the intake, then i dont see why remotly locating the reservoir wouldnt work. I could just use my Gen2 cover and pump, although i think it'd look a bit weird having a bare pump.

Although it has been a while since I looked, I'm pretty sure the resevoirs are not interchangable.

the resivior is located on the fire wall about level with the pump, or maybe higher, i'll get a pic up on thursday. i just took the res off a 91 pump for a W car, its not too goofy lookin, just needs cleaned up. you wil have to tap the hole for a line, or get a pump for an 86 J with a fitting in it,you'll have to figure out lines too, you could use the resivior from an 86 to, you just need to sit down and look at the stuff for a while and see where things would fit and stuff.

im not sure if the 86 j body ps pump will bolt to a gen 2 or 3 timing cover. the power steering pump and alternator are swaped on the 86 compared to a gen 2/3 motor.

i'll take my gen2 pump out there tommorrow and compare them, if i recall they looked identical, but its not like i dote over PS pumps.

The Gen 2 pump and the Gen 3 pump ARE in fact identical. The reservoirs DO interchange. There's just 2 clips that hold the reservoir to the pump, then the reservoir just pops off.. done this at work many times..
