  • Double Timing Chain and Gears Set?

Just a quick question, will double Timing Chain and Gear sets from the RWD 2.8/3.1 work on FWD 2.8/3.1L? Im assuming yes, but dont know about timing cover clearance. TIA

Hmm I am not sure either. I know it wont work in a J body cuz they already have a narrowed set. Find a RWD timing cover and measure it to see if it any deeper than a FWD cover.

It can be done, with the Cloyes set anyways, but you do need to machine the FWD timing chain cover inside to make it fit properly. Otherwise it'll hit the cover, and ruin all the fun.

By "machine" how do you mean? Like how much material do I have to take off to make it work? Alot? FWD Timing Cover isnt that thick, so if its a lot, I would be afraid to try it

The cloyes set sucks. It didnt last 50k miles for me, and I know gpxss has his go out prematurely as well. They stretch fast, which sucks.

Not sure on how much to machine. Haven't done it myself. I'm just running a Sealed Power stock replacment set, and it's working fine for over 2 years now.

Yeah, I was going to anyway. I was just curious, cuz I saw a double chain set on Ebay for like $10.00 and was just wondering if anyone had done it

Yeah a few people have used the double roller sets in FWD engines, the clearance is needed is about the same as using a second timing cover gasket, although a little more clearance is desired. I have not personally used a double roller set, but I have heard a dislike for the Cloyes set, as mentioned.

I run a stock replacement set for a FWD 3.1 in my RWD, which when I ordered I gave the wrong number, I was going to use the RWD version since it is a tad thicker, but I don't see it being nessisary in this case.

You can acutally use the GEN1 timing chain setwhich is thinker than the Gen2 timnig chian set. I do beleive it's also cheaper in price. it's like to links thicker. I know you can pick up a dynagear set from autozone for around $20-$25.
