  • Oil Cap breather benefits...?

I used to have one on my last car...it's mainly for looks and I actually rarely had it on the engine. But I've heard from people it can reduce crankcase pressure and reduce knock, and also act like the PCV valve. Is a breather really that beneficial? If it is I'll try and find one for this engine. Are there any available for the 3100?

I don't care about looks, so I'll keep the regular cap, or get a billet one that a certain member is making (I forget the name), if a breather does nothing at all. Just wondeing what others thought on this....thanks.

    RE: Oil Cap breather benefits...?

I would imagine on the pushrods that its going to help a little. The PCV system is obviously going to do more though but the front valve cover doesn't have a PCV setup like the rear. On the 3.4 DOHC, both valve covers have a vacuum line to PCV, but then again, there is a hell of a lot more going on in the DOHC top end than the pushrods. Honestly, I would guess there is no measurable difference and the pcv from the rear should suffice.

The OCV is one one cover and the breather is on the other. 1 cover is connected to the other. It is all 1 big air space.

On aftermarket and custom engines they usually have a breather with its own filter. On stock motors the breather just goes to the air tube where air is already filtered by the intake filter.
