I can see where it might not so easy to use this Megasquirt system on a car or truck that has an auto trans ect...ect.... because the computer does other things. But for my Porsche/v6 project it would be pretty easy right?
I take it that you would have to build your own harness, use all the sensors off the engine and wire them to the control unit.
But what would you do for spark?
Brad,I'm going to save this one for"phaseII" of the project.Somebody on the 914 site is always switching over to Megasquirt so I just wondered how hard it would be to convert. That is the trouble with these forums is that you can get caught up in all the mods other people are doing and say"hey............while it's apart"..............now would be a good time...ect...ect......
I need to get this car back on the road and start to learn how to drive it!!!
But I do still have a question tho, when you take the GM computer out of play how do you control the spark?
The way I started going was with an MSD DIS-4. It will fire the coils for you, and you "should" be able to trigger it via the output from a standalone. Then I started looking into a way to use the stock DIS setup. It has been explained and shown to me (awhile back unfortunately) that it can effectively be wired up just like a distributor. If I can find the info I used to have, I'll post it up. It didn't seem to me at first like it would work, but the more I started looking at it, the more it made sense. Of course, like I said, it was a few years back, so I can't seem to bring those detailed memories out of the brain right now. I'll see if I can find something tonight about it...
Some aftermarket standalone controllers can handle spark as well as fuel. The Haltech E6 is one such model that can control the stock GM DIS system. You adjust the timing maps just like the fuel maps. The basic Megasquirt system will only handle fuel, but they have other models that handle spark as well.

This is what I'm dealing with now,the OEM harness and computer with as much as the uneeded stuff trimmed off,.....well as much as I know how to trim off. I'm not very good at electric stuff as I am mechanical.......
Marty and I were looking over my standalone last night and determined that it should be easily integrated with the existing ignition system. As I stated, the ICM acts basically like a distributor, and if you look at the wiring diagrams for say, a 7730 ECM, the ICM and distributor hook up exactly the same as far as the ECM is concerned. As Marty brought to my attention, each standalone is different in how it controls things or what inputs and such are required. But as we looked at mine, it has the ability (and diagrams) to hook up to distributor and wasted spark systems. When using the distributor, the ECM requires 3 triggers (the 3x signal) and then sends the spark info back to the ignition amplifiers (ICM). The problem I was having was I was trying to hook it up as a wasted spark system (which would make sense IF you don't use the ICM), which required more triggers. It basically brought new life to my project... I don't know when I'll actually get a chance to mess with it, but it will be interesting to see if it will indeed work by just interfacing it with the ICM.
ie, Steve, you'll probably have to wait until your Phase 2, and even then you might now convince me to sell it to you. But you never know...
As I said before,I need to get the engine back together and finish the car so I can race it at least a couple of times this year, but this would be a cool thing to work on when the car is done and next winter gets here. I know I can make the OEM harness look a lot cleaner when it comes time to install, but I think the aftermarket unit would end up being less wiring.
I looked at the Megasquirt II unit from the link StudlyCamero provided but didn't see a price.
Hey!,
It looks like you can get the whole shootin match for about $317.00. The basic Megasquirt kit/ingnition control and a relay board to hook all the power to..................
MegaSquirt can contol ignission many ways. It can use a HEI distributor, it is commonly used with Ford's EDIS system as well. Recently, it has been worked out so that it can control GM's DIS with MSnS-E. Megasquirt has a great manual and a lot of help on their forums.
I'm planning on putting a post 2000 3100 or 3400 in my '87 Dodge Raider and will be using MS to control fuel. There are places out there that sell built Megasquirt computers and accessories.
They even have a wideband O2 board that will work with Megasquirt. Megacool!
