Yeah, I find that hard to believe... Considering beefed up versions of the 65E are being used by several pro FWD dragsters.

yea, you read that right, he said the 65 is a bad tranny
the 65 is probably the most wanted FWD AUTO tranny out there. even the freaking ricers are making adaptor plates to make it work with there shit.
show me an 11 second 1/4 mile 4t40/45 tranny. for every one i will show you 50 4t65's that handles 11's all day on a DAILY driver.
the freaking 4t40/45 cant even handle a damn 4cyl engine's power, let alone the freaking v8 power that they are putting the 65's to.

My dads GTP was running consistant 12.40's when he had his original tranny rebuilt, and it had been for about a year or so. The car wasn't stock as soon as he got it home from the dealer, and hes been modding it ever sense, and he beats the crap out of it. It had over 100 1/4 mile runs on it, all except for 3 that were in the 12's, the other 3 were in the low 13's. (I think the slowest run ever was a 13.3) A lengthy burnout was done for all of these runs as well since he runs slicks. The tranny was still functioning perfect when it was rebuilt, but he got a new one put in because he changed his gears and torque convertor so he figured he might as well. The tranny guy said that it looked to be in pretty good shape, I think he said the 2nd gear clutches were worn a little more than they should've been, but everything else looked good. He is making around 320whp/380wtq. right now and running 12.0 @ 115 and the tranny is showing no signs of slipping. That tranny has been in there for about a year now and has around 8-10k miles on it. He has broken a few halfshafts, but never a tranny. His car is a daily driver in the summer. He is tearing it apart to put a cam in it this weekend, so then it should easily be a mid 11 second car, and my dad is not worried at all about the tranny. It shouldn't have any problems holding that kind of power.
My moms '00 SSEi also has the 4t65 in it, it has 130k on it, its also mildly modded with a pulley, rockers, K&N, ud wp pulley, dhp pcm, etc.... It is a high 13 second car (and you have to remember it has over 4000lb. race weight with the driver, so thats a lot of stress on the tranny) and we've never had a problem with the tranny. Its made numerous runs at the track and the tranny is holding up just fine.
The 4T40/45 don't even come close to comparing to the 4t65.

I thought the #'s were in reference to torque rating 60 handles more then 45, and 80 handles more than 65. at least thats what the dude at the dealership told me. I'm sitting here thinking my tranny sucks cuz some dude is running his mouth without checking facts. now that's fucked up. thank god this site has people like Shawn, Brad, and Germ to reinforce the facts.I wish 10% of the people on the road knew how to drive

But in Any normal application from GM a 80>60>50>40
There were a few downfalls when the 65E came out. One of the thrust washer/bearings failed quiet frequently. I saw several cases at my dads work. But rest asured I even had a chance to meet a real GM engineer that was there following up on the situation and the trannies have been rectified in recent years.1993 EXT. YOu know they make blue plates for the 65. The 60 get the high statics,,and the 3t40s get the reds. I keep buring 3rd on my tranny. I got a shift kit and am lookng at a souce for blue plates for the 3rd cluches and red for the band (2nd) and high static for 1st. SHould be fun.88 Beretta GTU turbo . 90 Black ASC/McLaren TGP, awaiting 4t80. 2003 Grand AM se 3400/4t45 daily grind.

I was talking stock.. off the factory floor.. I didn't say a 65 beefed up was horrible...
I am talking from number that come right outta my shop.. You tell me why a 65e or 60e in a taxi can't go 200,000km with out blowing up.. where as we haven't seen a 40/45e come into the shop with less than 300,000km on it from a taxi...
Sonex doesn't make up dates for the 40/45s for a reason.. there are so many flaws in a 60/65 that need to be fixed to make them last...
Yes you can build them up to be strong transmissions.. but off the factory floor I'd trust a 40/45 any day..

if the 4t40/45 is stronger than the 60 and 65, then why didnt gm use them in all cars with higher output levels than a grand am 4cyl and 3400????
because they suck balls man.
and just to clarify, what Taxi's are you working on that have 4t40/45's and the 60/65's????
i dont think i have ever seen a taxi that was a Grand Am/Monte Carlo/Grand Prix/Beretta/etc....
i have seen some Impala's and Lumina's, but those are it. and they dont have 4t40/45's in them

Impalla's have a 65 in them.. We see TON's of luminas... Malibus have a 40/45 in them..
I couldn't tell you why GM did what they did.. We have had only 3 40es come through my shop from passenger cars...
1 was rat bagged on from day 1.. taken to the track when ever possible.. almost 200,000km His only problem was a set of clutches flaking causing an occational 2nd gear chatter..
1 was mainly a high way driven car with 280,000km on it.. But he ran an auto trans interceptor with 100% line pressure all the time.. His only problem was a worn out channel casting causing a loss of lock up.. A simple sleave fixed it..
the last one we saw had simple epc failure causing slimy shift and the transmission to go into limp mod..
I was at our other location yesterday and there was a malibu in there with 360,000km on it.. It was the first time the transmission was coming out.. I have yet to pull a 60/65 out with that many km on it and still be running..
where are you getting your info that they suck balls?

I can see how a 440-t4/4t60 can't be reliable because they sucked from day one. #1 cause is OD fails. Not enough clutch aria. 2nd is 3rd gear slip. then stove pipe. They are just not good. They can hold the power..but the hydrolics are not cast right. And 4th is just faulty desigh.
The 4t65..well I wouln't know.
This is why im sticking 3t40. With simplicity comes reliability.
But beyond these weeds...the 3400 can handle what your pocket vault can handle.88 Beretta GTU turbo . 90 Black ASC/McLaren TGP, awaiting 4t80. 2003 Grand AM se 3400/4t45 daily grind.

dude, im not gonna argue with you about this.
if the 4t40/45 is so reliable then attach that bitch to a 3800 or an L67 and see how long it lasts.
hands down, there is a reason why GM put the 60/65 trannies on those engines, its the best FWD Auto tranny they had at the time (to this day as well). Period!
if you dont believe the issues the 4t40/45 has, go over to www.grandamgt.com and ask how reliable the tranny is.

you guys need to stop argueing with the guy that knows both trannies inside out. i also work in the transmission buisness. as i am not a builder, i still know about these trannies. i can honestly say, the 4t40e is a tough tranny. i have only ever rre/re-ed 1 4t40e in over a year and a half. now i cannot count how many 4t60/4t60e/4t65e trannies i have seen smoked. i ususaly dont go 2 weeks without seeing one. a lot of the problems with the 4t60e are valves and solonoid problems. we have a sonnex book at work, they make 10 pages of avalible updates for the 60e/65e, and there isnt one update for the 40/45e. there is a reason behind this.
you guys may hate to see it, but the 4t40e/45e is a better designed tranny.
