  • Cam shaft question/3.1 buildup

Looking at cams for my engine re-build,I saw this one on the GM Parts Direct site. Is this comparable to the H260 or 272? Here are the specs...
    @.050 lift duration 204*/216*
    valve lift is .427/.454
    lobe c/l is 112
RPM range 1500-4500...6500 with proper valve springs
    GM's part # 12364059

Ok,if that's the 260,that is what I'm going to use, The next question is who is less exspensive? GM or Crane?
Next question,I want to use LS1 valve springs. What do I tell the parts man......which spring for what????

I found GM was cheaper for that cam, and yes it is the 260-2, great cam, I like mine.

Why use the LS1 springs? I doubt you will utalize them. No sense in overkill

You can buy the 260 grind from PAW for 109 and get lifters for less than 30 anywhere u look.
I got My 272 and lifters from PAW and it was 139 bucks or so. I dont know what GM charges but I thought I might as well mention what I paid.

So the stock springs will be fine?
I'm going to Autox this car, probably not more than 3/4 throttle at any given time. Also 1st and 2nd gear only.I've not been to a course where 3rd is needed.

i didn't think big cams were good for boost, how is it you forced induction guys are using them? or are these not overly agressive, agressive cams?

id stick with the 260 cam if you dont plan on getting out of the first 2 gears. more torque than stock, and the 272 cam in the bottom end. first to 2nd seems to drop quite few rpms on my car, so id want a broad torque curve to cover that. as far as springs, i think the ones crane has for us are sbc springs, i dunno if ls1 springs are stiffer, if you dont plan on reving higher than stock, don't bother.

Cranes springs are straight conventional springs. They are not the Beehive ones found on the Gen III heads.

The stock Gen III springs are good.

whats wrong with conventional springs? springs take power they dont make any anyways. he has gen2 stuff, would gen3 springs swap right in, or would he need the retainers and locks also? i dont think the springs were expensive anyways, crn-99848-16(-12 for 6cyl) $59.88, brand new, and they work with stock retainers, .5" lift. its what they guy sold me with my cam, i got the 260. i noticed in the summit book they have dual ls1 springs, with a lower spring rate, so i guess if they fit they are the better ones, but they are 90 bucks more.

i think you should go with whatever spring meets the need, if you plan on first and second gear, maybe getting the extra rpm is better for you. but to stiff a spring will eat power. now i see these other springs, i might have do some more shopping. i dont desire anything over 6000rpm personaly.

I figured he was using Gen III heads since he said he wanted to swap to LSx springs. But there is no need for LSx springs with just a 260 cam

But if he is using Gen I or II stuff then by all means buy GM Crate engine springs or Crane springs. Note that you will need different retainers because the install hight specification is different.

                          '94 are Gen III heads.

That is definately the 260 cam and it is a great cam. Its good for N/A and boosted engines. I think mine was $151 through GM with the lifters.

                            It is a 94 3100 right not a 94 3.1L

I think this discussion needs some clearing up. You CANNOT use a 260 flat tappet cam if you have a 3100. A 3100 has a roller valvetrain.

You Can run it if you have a 3.1L.

So what do you own A 3.1L, 3100 or a Hybrid which has a 3.1L bottom end and 3100 heads?

                              Its a 3.1L bottom with a 3100 heads and a 3400 mani/plenum. All going into a Porsche.
