  • 3400 modified cam timing with stock cam?

    does anyone know of the possibility of indexing the stock cam? or anyone know how many degrees of timing one tooth is worth on the cam sprocket? ive considered using a degree wheel and re-drill a hole for the dowel pin to change the index of the cam. The reason is i just put my 3400/3500 hybrid back together for the second time, eff pulling the cam out and waiting 3 weeks for a wot-tech cam to be made. The stock cam isnt terrible and i believe 15-20 hp can be had by tweaking this because these engines respond really well to cam mods. My hybrid can rev to 7000+ rpm safely, so by moving the power band up by retarding cam timing, in theory should gain power from the extra rpm. Am i wrong? let me know what you think!

    looks like the cam sprocket is 36 teeth, so one tooth would be 10 degrees, far too much of a timing change to jump one tooth. you could use an offset crank key. another option is a cloyes double roller timing set, it has multiple crank keyways for advancing or retarding the cam timing.

    i dont think 15-20hp is gonna be in the cards though.

      Do you have the part number for that adjustable timing set? I can't find it on the web.

      Well, I know that more rpm makes power. It has port'n'polished 3500 manifolds, 3500 heads with 3 angle valves, 65 mm TB, all ARP fasteners, 3500 ported front manifold on both sides of the engine and an equal length downpipe from a Probe Gt. So the engine can support plenty of CFM up top. The cam limits top end power but moving the peak power band of the cam up to say 6500 rpm, it would definitely make at least 20 hp more up top as to where the cam ram out of power before. with the cost of some bottom end maybe. I didn't mean make more peak horsepower, just shift what it already has. The engine would feel more like an BMW inline 6 this way and probably more fun.

        the cloyes timing set i found was actually for a gen 1 and 2 engine, not sure if itll work for the roller cam engines.

          I couldn't get my stock cammed LX9 to rev beyond about 5800 RPM. I mean it would REV past that, but the power was all gone at 5800 RPM and wouldn't pull that hard above there. I am turbocharged as well, which really should extend the power band of a turbo. I made one change, and that was the cam to an aftermarket cam and then it would rev to 7000 RPM without issue,puling all the way up. So you may be able to "rev to 7000 RPM", but I can basically guantee you're not making any additional power beyond about 56 to 5800 RPM.

          Also retarding the cam timing wouldn't net 20 HP, not in a 60 degree V6, especially with a stock cam.

          No, your best bet is to buy an aftermarket cam, and install it straight up, it's proven and it works.
