  • LS1 spring valve seal questions...

i have the 2000+ heads and have put on the LS1 springs and stuff.

i used the vin M valve seals and all of them are fine, but 2 of them. they are the black ones.

the fit on the valve post and seems to hold well, but once the car is running and i get 50 miles on them, they fall off the post.

its only those two, 1 on each head, at the end where cyl 1 or 6 would be.

ive seen post about he 96+ 318 valve seals, but never saw a part #.

i know someone has done it.

anyone have any ideas for these 2 seals that dont want to stay? ive already taken them off and scuffed up the surface of the post so it wouldnt slide off, but im pretty sure it has. i get a nice trickle of burning oil smoke in my exhuast and i pretty sure its from the seal not seating correctly.

anyone got some good ideas or the 318 PN?

RE: LS1 spring valve seal questions...

I managed to find the 318's without a part number, let me see if I can dig up the invoice from where I ordered it.

yeah, I can't really get an actual part number but I'll describe the process I used to find them, it took me all of 2 minutes.
    go to www.carparts.com
at step 1 set your vehicle year to 1997 and the make to dodge
for step 2 enter "valve seal" under where it says part description
    click "find parts"
it will ask you what model you want
    you want "pickup ram 1500"
now it asks what engine you want
you want the 5.2L fuel injected V8 vin Y
it should say "engine, valve seal" highlight this and click next
it will come up with the valve seal, it's $2.05 each

this was the second easiest part for me to find for my LS6 spring swap (the springs were the easiest due to the gm part number lying around, the spring seats were the hardest because everyone was useless for this, but I eventually found some that gave a perfect fit without grinding)

    hope this helps

      thanks for the info man

to bad that if i follow your info i am going to have to pull the damn heads off again.

unless i can get one of those cyl compressor things to keep the valves up while i put the seals on.

      damn

you could try my trick where I jam nylon rope through the spark plug hole while that cylinder is at BDC until I can't get any more in then turn it to TDC, it holds the valves up pretty well

          let me get this straight...

your saying to take off the spark plug, shove some rope into the combustion chamber and then move the pistions up as close to TDC as possible? by doing that it compresses the rope and then inturn keeps the valve from falling down?

          hmmmm

          thats not a bad idea

which valve spring removal tool did you use? the lever or the clamp style?

I've been using the lever style because it was the most easy available. I'd like to note that when I did my spring swap, the motor was out of the car but the heads were still on (since it's in the middle of moving to a fiero) which gave me added clearance for the lever.

You can also use compressed air to keep the valves in place with an air fitting that screws into the sparkplug hole. Just be careful you don't apply too much air or the engine will want to turn.

Re: LS1 spring valve seal questions...

Yeah I was the one who delt with that. Go to auto zone and buy them the set there. FelPro. I don't remeber the number but just look for '96+ Dodge/Jeep. They will be green.
