So I get my block back from the machine shop (hot tanked) today and I install the cam bearings and cam. I then go to install the piston rings in the cylinders to measure ring end gap. The engine was not bored as it did not have extreme taper (.002). My ring end gaps came up way out of spec. Spec was about .20 and I was getting .24. Wear is .001 = .004 ring gap increase. Anyways I was irritated because the instruct said it would be fine. He says I can put it together like that and it should be fine, with some blow by. I said forget it and threw the block in my car and took it to the machine shop to be bored and honed. I am going to see how bad the shop is going to get me to bore/hone, install new pistons on new rods, order rings, cam, main, rod, possibly cam and crankshaft. They were not sure about what they were going to bore it out to, I would assume .030. The re-ring and bearings idea did not work out as planned. I guess it is now time not to half-ass it. Anyone have any suggestions on parts or anything else I should replace? Thanks.

I could get file fit rings but I cant see rebuilding it like that an only having it last 40 thousand miles. I went to the machine shop today and he said it would cost $796 for, new pistons, rings, oil pump, new roller lifters, timing components, bearings, pressure relief valve, galley plugs, clean the block (again I had it cleaned the other day), bore/hone, install new pistons on rods. I already have all the gaskets. So that is what I am going to do, probably be bored out .020. I have to ask him about having the heads decked but I already have them assembled. It sucks.
