Are the stock headgaskets and head bolts reusable on the 3400?

  • #2
Gaskets? No way. Head bolts? The stockers are torque-to-yield design, which means you are supposed to use them only once, but there are a lot of people who get by without changing them.

Cool, that's what I thought. It woulda been nice to have a reusable gasket though.

I've never looked, but does someone make copper gaskets for 660's?

www.cometic.com I think they will make custom copper gaskets for all engines. There might be others.

Search this form for a thred about copper head gaskets there was a part # and all.
I was shocked at the fact you could get them.
It was a big maker too, not mister gasket but mildon or SCE.

Just wondering one thing about the copper gaskets. It lists the gasket bore as 3.8something. IIRC, the bore of the 3.4 is 3.6something. I don't know much about sizing gaskets, so does it matter that these 2 numbers don't really line up or anything of that sort?

They do that for the same reason they use 4.06'' gaskets on a 4.00'' bore 350ci.
That is how they should be that is what the stock gasket should look like to.
The bore on a stock 3.4L is 3.62''.
It is also so you can use them on bored engines too.
It gives some head and block materal so the gasket isn't sitting on the very edge of the combustion chamber or cylinder wall. It gives some room for fire errosion.
You will be fine gitting those.
I'm going for the thin one.

The 3.4/3400 felpro gaskets I have measured have a 3.75" bore.

I didn't think SCE make headgaskets for the 3.1.... What do they charge? I get them for 70 bucks a pair from somewhere else.

these are alledgedly for a 3.4...I would assume that means 3400 as well, it is on the last page of the link further above: http://www.scegaskets.com/pdf/page%2042-46.pdf
I have no idea if 3.4 and 3.1 head gaskets are interchangible though.

Both Jegs and Summit carry sce products. I don't know about Jegs, but Summit will be able to tell you if they make them and get them for you if they do.

Just replaace the head bolts, I think they run 18.88. They are a torque to yeild, they will snap, good thing is they never snap off flush.
