  • Exhaust system for 3.1

My mom's 92 Euro has a kink in the exhaust system, so we're getting the pipes, converter, and muffler replaced next week. I wanted to know what the optimal diameter is for an unmodded (other than K&N drop-in ) 3.1. We're gonna keep the single exhaust design (it's no race car, and never will be). I was figuring on going with 2.25" pipes.

Also what are the stock pipes' diameter? They look so small (compared to my dad's 3" on his Safari and even my 2.5" on my Z34). I know they're stock, they almost look like they're 2"... what's the stock size?

Also ( ), has anyone heard a 3.1 (or similar) with a magnaflow muffler? I am very dedicated to their products (have magnaflow cat and mufflers on my Z34, and magnaflow muffler on my dad's Safari (sounds like a V8 below ~3000RPM)). I'm also open to suggestions for Dynomax, just no Flowmaster garbage (I don't like the chambered design, even though it's better for sound, I had one blow out a plate a few months ago).

2.25 is a safe diameter for the exaust... the biggest restriction on these cars is the cat... and your replacing that so you have already taken care of the biggest problem. yes, i have heard a 3.1 with magnaflow exaust... it wasnt single setup though it was a split pipe right at the rear monoleaf into dules almost eaxctly like the z-34s and it sounded nice. I personally have a 92' lumina 3.1 and i put dules on it... they are split at the monoleaf like the z-34s and i have two glasspacks on it... short ones... about 10-12 inch chamber setup... i used the stock pipe diameter because i was concerned about backpressure... i have the glaspacks going the right way with holes in the fins that stick up facing forward into the exaust flow... i think this was the key in achiving a good sound... they sound awsome... deep low rumble... now you dont have to believe me on this next commet its my opinion... i think the glasspacks sounded better than the magnaflow... but i had the exaust system bent and installed at a local place that has been doing exaust systems for 30 years... so maybe they did something with the bends that im not aware of that is some sort of trick... i wanted to put magnaflow mufflers on my car but they discuraged it because they said the two were the same... i was skeptical on that comment but... i figured that is what the have been doing for many years and they would know better than me... so that is my advice take it of leave it...

Yeah what you said about the Magnaflow's being about the same as glasspacks is correct. All Magnaflow's are are basically really big resonators / glasspacks. Look inside a Magnaflow and look inside a glasspack, same design in a different shape. The difference is glasspacks are MUCH louder.

I think I'm going with the Magnaflows, I heard the car with the pipes cut today (replaced cat today, pipes and muffler to come next week) and man, I can't believe a V6 could sound so mean. It's a beast! Too bad it was such low horsepower.

At least my mom will scare those Mustang Cobra drivers when she pulls up next to them. I just hope she doesn't try to race anyone
