i have my own custom made headers in my Jbody...

the S&S do NOT fit in the jbody engine bay. i have tried. they also dont fit around the transmission either.

i have pics of the headers and why they dont fit:

front header hits the 5spd due to the Taller bellhousing of the 5spd compared to the Auto 4T45E in the 3400 Nbody.

Due to the Trans issue the front header wont even properly bolt up to the head at all.

due to this front problem... well the whole header would have to be cut refabricated, and welded, and then you'd have to do a new X-over pipe to join the two headers back together)

    Top view.

Picture Curtousy of BRAD showing how the rear header needs to be re-worked due to its routing is completely wrong, -Lbody manifold/piping going fairly straight down to clear the firewall, the S&S header going angled/diagonal out. the Jbody LBody's basically shared the same Exhaust layout.. very very similiar.

No, they won't fit the bay. Colin tried on a J-body and I tried on an L-body. Here is a pic showing just how off it is...

Stock downpipe on the bottom and S&S headers on the top.

Do they need to be made that way?

Those primaries aren't even close to being equal length!

So, what about on a newer W-body. Say a '01?? I haven't really poked around the engine bay too much to see if they would fit or not.

True... but, they are much better than the stock manifolds. Amazingly, I still have yet to see anyone dyno a set of the S&S, but the TOG's are almost exactly the same and they showed a ~17hp gain.

17 HP! where can I get a set? for my jbody? I am currently building a 3400 and a set of headers would comkplement it great.

Those actually look fairly decent too. However they could use a slightly longer collector, and mor eimportant, longer primaries.

1799 canadian is About 1100 or 1200 USD, longer collector would be nice but these fit the way the should and are 200% better than stock manifolds

there is no doubt about it, they are 200% better that stock, and they are real purdy, but i think they can be improved apon. i still havent figured out why they need to be made of medical grade stainless steel. a regular stainless or even mild steel would be just fine, and wont rust if its coated

i personaly dont like how they still go over the tranny, its the worst possible design ever for underhood temps, especialy with your throttle body right next to the pipe. i am going to be building my own headers, and they will be very close to colin's deign. im going under the oilpan with the front header, but im going to use oval pipe (its like 7/8-1" tall, but wider so it flows the same) for extra ground clearance. im also going to go with about a 10" collector. i will be backing it with dual 2" exaust dumping out the sides.

ill be building these once my new motor is ready to go in the car. ill build the headers on the old motor, and once they are finnished, ill send them for coating and put the new motor in, then stick them on.
