  • Exhaust for 3.1

I want to put a new muffler on my 93 Lumina Euro 3.1. Does anybody have any recomendations? This is a daily driver, so I don't want anything really loud, but a nice growl would be great.

BTW, someday down the road I plan on a new cam, heads, etc. Does anyone know of any good books on rebuilding or modify the 3.1? I'd like to read up before I get started. Thanks in advance.

If you want just a bark and growl then I would use Flowmaster.

my advice to you would be to get a hanes book and see if that satisfies you... and if not this site has oodles of info on it you just need to look for it... for your exaust question... i would go with flowmasters... i have a dual glasspack setup and its laud... but it gives a very quality sound... people think i have flowmasters untill they look under my car... i would keep the original pipe diameter if your worried about loosing backpressure and for god sake change the cat.

        Flowmaster

Ok, I got a flowmaster 40 Series Stainless Deltaflow ($40 on Ebay) and put it on the car. The exhaust sounds pretty good (maybe a bit to mellow), but it resonates terribly inside the car. It's actually louder inside the car than outside. Is there any way to fix this? I tried lining the floor of the trunk with sound insulation, but it didn't really change. I don't mind the noise around town, but when I set the cruise it really gets to rattling my ears, especially on a long trip. BTW the car has more get up and go then ever.

a buddy of mine has a flowmaster 40 series with resonator tips, and it sounds nice. if you want a real deep sound, get a 60 series. its designed specificly for small displacment motors (were a 40 series is more for v and sounds ausome with our motors

A "resonator" will cut down on the drone/resonance in the interior of the vehicle. Type in something like "universal exhaust resonator" on a search engine if you plan on finding one online. Most local exhaust shops should have resonators in stock though. I believe the general rule of thumb is that the longer the resonator, the more sound/resonance it will cancel out.

I found a place that sells stainless resonators. Does it matter if the resonator is before the muffler or after it? Also, if I replaced the stock 2" pipe with 2 1/2" would this mess up the back pressure? Does the engine computer adjust for this or would I have to make other changes? I'm aiming to eventually have all stainless pipes under the car and would like to run all 2 1/2" pipes if possible.

                2 1/2 inch is prime for a 3.1
and dynomax ultraflow although a bit more costly than flowmaster
                is what i would suggest
now on to the building part
start out by reading chevrolet power
and you know just ask around
                i could offer some suggestions
what exactly do you want to accomplish with your build is the biggest question
