  • difference between 3.1 and 3100?

Well I tried a search but came up with about 200 results, so hopefully someone could assist me. I have the 3.1V6 and a know there is a later varient called the 3100. The 3.1 is rated at like 140hp max and the 3100 150-185 or something. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the difference between these to similar engines. Also I am about 30miles away from a junkyard where I could get many parts, so are there any easy interchangeable parts like the IM or anything? I don't really want to get to invovled with this car since I am saving up for a Tib. Thanks guys.

the 3.1L is the older Generation 2 family of engines.

    the 3100 is a Gen 3 engine.
there are a huge amount of differences between them
    3100:
different style heads, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds
    roller lifters/camshaft.
    96+ 1.6:1 roller rockers.
    cross bolted main caps
    revised oiling in block.
    ect ect ect.

parts can be interchanged but its an involved swap. its what we call a "hybrid"

there are heaps of posts involving the differences and what is needed to be used to build a hybrid. there is also info on main page on differences between blocks ect.

Yeah..I was kind of thinking of maybe swapping out the TB assembly and maybe the IM if it will bolt up from the 3100. You know..a full engine from the junkyard would cost me about $80 w/o accories..maybe I should just do that? But I didn't want to get involved

TB won't mount up. I don't know why, but they swapped corners for the mounting bolts between the 3.1 and 3100. IOW, a 3100 TB would be turned 90º if you mounted it to a 3.1 plenum.
