Also, does anyone know if it is possible to use a Gen III lower intake and modify it to accept a distributor? (I'm carb'ing the engine, so I'd rather not use a computer.) Is it simply a matter of boring a hole in the correct place in the intake and assuring that the elevation of the mating surface is correct? What about cams and oil pumps. How does all of that work together on a Gen III engine? If it can't be done (I seem to be talking myself out of it when I think about all the work it would be), what stand-alone ignition system works well given that budget is a factor. MoTeC is nice, but I'd like to use that money somewhere else on the truck.

The problem with a dizzy is the actual physical size of the cap that hits the intake. There is no problem with getting a distributor shaft in there. On our motors there is no dizy hole in the intake because the intake does not go over it. So you dont have to worry about drilling any holes.

There are 2 different lowers... the 94-99 3100 lower (egg-shaped ports) and the 3400/00+ 3100 lowers (flat oval ports). The latter are the better design due to larger volume of the runners.

There are two options, the one I'm choosing, a custom lower, but nit just because of the dizzy, or a custom (remote) mounted dizzy, like a front mount, similar to what Jesel sells.

I'll see what I can do, I'll warn you now it was just to see how much had to be cut out, it was never meant to be a finished deal.
What I did find out was that to put a dizzy in the stock hole, then a custom lower will be need, no question about that, since by teh time a piece was welded into the intake to seal up the #6 runner, it would be completly blocked off.
I'm interested in those pics too. The Mallory Dual Point Distributor for 60Dg V6's (MAL-2369201 from century performance) is pretty tiny looking, I'm thinking it just might do the trick with little or no cutting on the intake. I was going to order one and find out for myself, but my wife nuked her 99 Beetle and we had to surrender our personal spending money from both our paychecks to fix the thing and still have food and electricity. Damn I hate OBD II...
