  • 2.8 + Gen III head questions...

    Hey guys,
I recently bought a set of Gen III aluminum heads. (Casting Number 24503769) I want to use these on a 2.8 RWD engine. From everything that I've read, the heads should work... I hope. Has anyone here done a similar swap? Also, this engine will be in a race truck, so I'd like to run very high compression (11.5-12.5:1). Does anyone make an off-the-shelf piston for a 2.8 that will give that kind of compression with Gen III heads and a long duration cam?

    TIA,

    Adam

With regular, stock low-output 2.8 iron head pistons, and a 0.060" thick gen2 head gasket, the gen3 heads will get you ~11.7CR, and with the high-output 2.8 pistons, you will get ~12.5 CR. By playing aorund with combustion chamber porting or thinner head gaskets, you should be able to get the desired compression.

just making sure but... you do know you also need GEN 3 intake manifolds.

but then again with this being a race truck you might have a custom manifold in the works already.

Check out my www button. I have a turbo hybrid in my '85 Jimmy. If you have any questions, just ask.

Thanks for the quick replies. Will the Edelbrock 4bbl intake not work on the Gen III heads? I was kinda expecting having to fab one from scratch in order to run a carburetor, but I was keeping my fingers crossed that I could find a bolt-on.

Will the 0.060" thick head gasket take care of any valve interference that a long duration cam may cause? The Chevrolet Power book says that the canted valves will not clear the old style pistons.

Thanks again for the quick replies!

No the Eddi manifold will not wor on GenIII or Gen II heads.

Canted valves will not be a problem. I dont know why the book would state that unless they are talking about a VERY high lift cam.
