  • Megasquirt in my Trooper 3.4L

    I have successfully started my truck with an ECU that I assembled myself. Pretty good feeling. I'm going to clean up my harness adapter, I ordered a better Delphi 56 socket header and I will assemble the adapter within an OEM ECU case. This is the proof of concept anyway. My Wideband sensor isn't showing properly in the tuning software, once I get that set up I'll be able to start getting the fuel tables dialed in.

    With the exception of hijacking the EGR wiring to add an IAT sensor, the factory wiring is untouched so I can pop the factory ECU back in easily if I need to.

      Did you tune yours on a dyno? I figured I can pull the spark table off my factory chip, but I'm thinking of taking it into portland or vancouver to get it tuned up properly.

        yeah, well bobby at Performance Race Engineering tuned it, he no longer works there tho.. but as far as I know the new tuner is good. Id take it to them again, or Wongs performance in vancouver. thats THE place to take your corvette around here.

          It actually drives pretty normally with the factory spark table loaded. I let it auto-tune on a little drive this afternoon, seems to work pretty well. I've got a nasty oil leak though, I split my oil pan gasket last time I installed the timing cover. The timing cover will have to come off again to maybe fix it (RTV the crap out of it). And if I'm doing that, the Camaro MPFI setup is going back on. No sense in taking it to a dyno until I get it back together with MPFI either.

            you're almost there. now get rid of the laptop, and completely integrate the tuning solution into your vehicle. like this: http://www.mp3car.com/show-off-your-...me-tuning.html . somethimes I regret going aem and wish I went with megasquirt for flexibility and future growth.

              nice. I never had good luck with auto tune. you really need to play with the target AFR table to get that dialed in. my car likes to run rich at idle or its all over the place.

                I thought I read that a rich idle is normal, and that auto-tune isn't used for the very low-load cells.

                  I rebuilt a 3.4L and put it in my Trooper last year. Although the motor runs great, I don't think I'm getting the performance out of it that I should. How hard was it to set up Megasquirt and do you expect to get much of a performance boost over the stock ECU?

                    If you're running the stock SFI PCM with the 3.4 you can tune that too
                    '89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11
                    '86 Fiero, 3500, 4-speed

                      I'm not running MS in my Trooper anymore. I've converted to MPFI using 3.1L manifolds with a 1227727 ECU under-hood. Some fine tuning to do, but it's running pretty well.

                      I set up a cold air intake since this picture was taken. Still need to tape and loom the wiring.

                        Oh guess what, I'm running MegaSquirt again. I repaired the board that I burned up with a wiring fault (figured out what went wrong). Rewired it using most of the original Trooper wiring, and it looks way better. It's a pretty rough tune right now, I need to spend some time with it. Or maybe I'll take it to a dyno shop and have the pros do it. I haven't been able to drive this truck with much confidence in a long long time. I should just crush it and move on, but it's my first car...
