if you want a real laugh, I'll find the post where someone was complaining about GM using steel head bolts in aluminum blocks...

        Edit: found it:

ok so i know its not the choice of most but its the motor i have and would like to use. so what would you do if you were going to use this set up. like i mentioned i'm just want the fiero to be quick and fun to drive. i'm not worried about 10second 1/4miles lol i've had camaros, supras, and mustangs that did that and this is just not what i want with this car.

eric thanks for chiming in over on the pennocks as well. input is always appreciated.

well i was thinking about $1000 for this car. like i mentioned up the thread i'm getting a funner car this summer. so this really is just having a little fun with this fiero and a back up for driving to work that will be better then driving my truck.

eric i viewed your build thread... nice very creative what you did with that intake to.

I would still just do a 3400 swap, they're good engines, make decent power over the range, good economy, they're cheap, easy to install, lighter. you could probably do that for less money then rebuilding the 3.4. I wouldn't install the 3.4 without a thorough rebuild. then if you want to make power, clean up the ports, port the hell out of the upper intake manifold, because on a 2.8/3.4, the upper intake is total garbage, throw a low rpm oriented cam in it and build a torque monster. with the iron heads, I wouldn't bother trying to spin it and make top end.

if you feel like trying to be a baller, you might see if one of these is still available:

probably the best you'll get for a iron head engine.

thanks for the input eric. i'm working on restoring the body right now so i have a month or so before i start the motor part of this build so i have some time to do some more reading and see if i'm confident enough to tackle the 3400. i'll have to keep my eye on craigslist for my area for a possible motor if i decide to go that route.

                  thanks

like I've said, the 3400 swap is pretty easy if done right, the hardest part would be the wiring/tuning, but even the wiring is documented well enough to make that fairly easy, and there's been a couple of 3400 swap fieros, I think ben even sells a chip for it IIRC.

                    edit:

ben does sell a chip for a 5 speed 3400 swap:

not to say further tuning wouldn't be required for optimal performance, but it's a good headstart.

You would not be disappointed with the 3400 sfi.
