  • 3100 Hybrid swap on 3.1 Turbo engine...ECM Problems?

A few months ago I had decided on doing a hybrid swap on my 3.1L. Well I was convinced by someone not to do it because of computer problems, and because I really didn't want to do all the work, but I just had a basically complete (blown up) 3100 offered to me for free that I could use all the topend off of, so I figured if the parts are free...why not?

However, I was told the fuel and timing tables will be really messed up with the new heads & intake in the ECM. Is that all thats gonna be messed up, nothing else? And it should still be ok to drive around it just won't be optimal because it will be running either rich or lean at certain points in the RPM band, right? I just want to make sure that the car will idle and drive well enough for me to drive around everyday before I get a custom tune done on the computer. (it would probably be next spring before I could get a custom tune done)

Also, what kind of power & torque gains do you think I would see over my Gen II intake & heads? They said the engine came out of a Cutlass Supreme, he said he thought it was a '97 but he wasn't sure...so it isn't the new intake and the bigger valves, it can't be if it came out of a cutlass supreme.

The engine doesn't have any accessories on it either, so I would need to get a power steering pump from a junkyard or something for it. About what do you think that would cost?

    Sorry for all the questions.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

the fuel and timing wont be screwed up as long as you use your fuel injectors. it may run a bit rich (seems to be normal with gen 2-3 swaps) but it is likely good for a turbo setup. im guessing about 20-30hp on the top end swap, but hard to say with the turbo, i dont know if anyone has done a hybrid turbo.

yes, but like he said above, that isn't a factory turbo car, so thats a little different...my car came from the factory with a turbo on it.

I know you'll have to weld the 3rd gen exhaust flinge on the turbos exhaust or work with the 3rd gen exhaust. Well I think you would have to mod the mid upper and upper high boost rpm band. The stock chip does some crazy stuff up there to compensate for the sorry flowing unported exhust ports on the gen 2 heads. You would also have to desable egr on the chip and the egr on the engine. Everything should run ok though. I ported my 2nd gen heads and they prob flow better than 3rd gen heads. The only problem I have is providing enough fuel..and keeping the detonation away (no intercooler). Expect to max out the turbo though. 280chp is all it can handle.
