  • Intake questions

I have an 89' Camaro 2.8 with MPFI. I intend to use the motor in a little Tbucket/Track roadster...which means a mostly or entirely exposed motor. For the forseeable future, the engine will remain stock. The only mods planned are a set of lake or zoomie style headers with baffles, and a bit hotter coil. I know the intake manifold sections are a performance weak link.....
    • Since I'm going to be removing at least the upper and middle sections for painting an putting on Fiero valve covers, would it be worth while having those sections ported? Would it be worthwhile pulling the lower section and having it ported?
    • More and more, I'm considering swapping out the MPFI set up for a carburation set up. Between the MAF sensor and all the ECU related wiring, I just don't like the look of the clutter on an exposed engine.
      • Are there any of the older factory carburation manifolds that will work on this engine? What would be a good carb for them?
      • I know Edlebrock makes a manifold for the ironheads. What is a reasonable price for a used one? What would be a good simple carb for use on one of those.
      • Is there a way to modify my distributor to work without the ECU?
      • What would be the most cost effective distributor set up for a non-ECU engine?

I think any from an iron head engine will fit, also the aftermarket ones for both 2bbl and 4bbl will do for you. There are probably lots of distributor models that will fit, I used a modified marine engine one. I would think of putting in a little better cam as long it is out, not much money and a little better zip. The coil will do you no good at all. Larry

I'm not tearing the engine apart far enough for a cam change...just enough for painting and the valve cover change. I'm not sure the engine is worth putting too much more in it. Later if the engine warrants rebuilding, and I can't find a cheap replacement, I'll do a cam change.

If you have the budget for it, i'll have a serious engine for sale soon..

A carb manifold would be a good idea here, like you said you'll have less clutter and less stuff to deal with by going old school. I'd think one of the early 2.8 distributors would work.. maybe one for an '82 S10.

If it's serious, by budget would be seriously short...LOL. This is a "bucket list" project, on a disability income.

It sure would look cool in a T bucket though. That is my plan if i can come up with a way to save it.

How about modifying a TBI intake from an S-10 to take a nice little 2BBL? That would be cheap. Larry

I've thought about that. If I run across a cheap S10 manifold I may play with that. I'd probably try making an aluminum adapter and use an old Ford/Autolite/Motorcraft 2100 or 2150 from an old 289V8.

What I'd most like to do is find a cheap used Edelbrock 4 bbl set up, with an adapter and a pair of either Ford 97s or 94s. That would give a nifty old school look.

I got a ROCHESTER CARBURETOR 2JET (I think it is) I'll give you, probably $10 to ship, was running on a 307 when I got it. Larry

I thought s10 intakes are on an angle since the engine slops towards the rear so the driveshaft is on a pitch. I think people had issues using them in setups where the engine is level. Just thought I would add that.

They do slope back, I have seen adapters made that both adapt a carb and take the slope out. Larry

I appreciate that Larry, but I'll hold off on taking you up on that until I get a manifold to know what type of carb I'll need for it.

                        Thanks again.

Yup, there is a slope issue....but I've got that covered. I can either mount the motor at the required slope, or I already have tracked down angled shims for the paired Stromberg 97s or Holley 94s that would be my ideal set up.

I'm building a track t powered by the 3.1 Isuzu engine, which is basically just a FWD block with iron heads. I'm running a bored TBI manifold along with a TBI unit from a 4.3 S-10. I too have the Fiero valve covers and lakes pipes. I'll be glad to post some pics up soon. I think we have emailed on the t bucket forum site.

Yes, we have exchanged messages on the T bucket forum. If I remember right, you're making other mods to your engine beyond just the lake headers and throttle body unit, correct? How much of a job was it to bore the manifold? Is it something that could be done with a small table-top drill press?
