  • Cam bearings and rear plug

Hey guys I got a question, before I put in the new cam, I took a look at the stock bearings, and I can start to see some copper showing, and the bottoms are worn. So I decided I need to put new bearings in. SBC wide bearings will be going in, but I have a few questions...

    1) All the bearings should be positioned with the oil hole at 4 o'clock?

    2) For the rear plug, should I just pound it out, then get a new one to replace it once the bearings are installled?

    3) Installing the bearings, I should start with the back bearing and work my to the front correct?

    4) I thought I had the tool around here somewhere, but I dont. So as for the tool, summit has them for the SBC, and since Im using the SBC bearings, I should get that tool?

Anything else I should need to know before doing this? I dont know if it matters or not, but Ill be using the 26986 springs.

    Thanks guys

Yes you need to remove the rear plug. The bearings go in from both ends. I believe the right position is 4-O-Clock but check the Chevy power manual I cannot remember off the top of my head.

I don't have to take the bottom end out to do this do I? I'd rather not.

No you can do it with the lower assembled.. I did mine with my heads still on.

As they said get a SBC cam too... The newer expansion style ones look like they would work great since the cheaper ones aren't held to a good tolerance so you may have to f with the die's to get them to fit... I know I had to on my cheap setup.

I put my oil holes between 4 and 5 roughly...

Mines not an expansion style either, and the dies are held on by o rings around the rod. I had the dies cone off inside the block once or twice, so it was fun fishing that out of the block.

I was looking at getting an expansion one, maybe trying to rent one first. It's a big bill to only do it once.

On the front bearing, are there still the two holes positioned at 3 and 6 or with the SBC bearings are they all positioned at roughly 4-5?

The SBC bearing will only have one hole. It is all you need but you can choose to add the second hole if you wish.

I left just the one and put it at 4:30 position roughly...
