  • Getting More out of the 3400

I have a 2000 Alero 3400 motor in my 1988 Beretta with the 2.8 fuel injectors and wiring harness. I need to know how I can get an extra 70 to 80 horsepower without putting on a turbo because I don't have the money for that. The only modification done to my exhaust is the catalytic converter was taken off. I would like to spend approximately 1400 all around. Thanks for the help.

70 to 80 horsepower for only $1400? The only viable candidate is nitrous, but you will need to be careful with tuning it......I'd highly recommend a good wet system since your 2.8 injectors probably won't be able to supply enough fuel on their own.

How much boost can my stock internals hold?
What kind of fuel injectors should I get? Would a CAI help? What about a muffler? I just dont know what kind of stuff I should get (as in I don't know what stuff is better).

Personally, I wouldn't recommend any more than a 75 shot of nitrous (for durability's sake - both the engine and transmission). The beauty of a "wet" nitrous kit is that it uses a dual-purpose injection nozzle - half delivers the nitrous oxide, and the other half delivers extra fuel - so in theory, you shouln't need to change your injectors. But this is where tuning comes into play.....keep tabs on your O2 sensor voltages to determine what fuel requirements you have.
BTW, when using nitrous, it's a good idea to use standard copper plugs (not platinum or iridium, or whatever the en-vouge thing is). You'll also want to narrow the spark plug gap some (stock gap I think is .060"; bring it down to around .040").
Anything you can do to free up the exhaust is a good thing, but just a muffler will have very little effect. The stock exhaust manifolds will work well enough, and a CAI might give you another 5HP, but that's about it.

If theres anything ive learned about the 3rd gen 60v6 pushrods is that they are serverly limited by thier computers. We managed to get DHP to start making ODBII PCMs for us over at MyMonte. At the last meet we had steph (spacecadet) over from bretta net and we explaned to her the advantage of ODBII tuning and how it IS possible to make it work on a bretta even with older OBDI or ODB1.5.

Im running mine on 3100 injectors and a 1.5 ECM and it is horribily limiting. I can only imagine what it feels like on even smaller injectors.

If you do go for nitrous I would go for a ODBII swap (not very expensive) with 22.5lb or higher injectors and throw a wet 75 shot in. Have the DHP tuned for a NO2 shot and your golden. This could be done in your budget as well however I wont gaurentte the longevity of your transmission.

As long as your running a T60 or T65 trans this can be done, it can be done with manuals too but it may take DHP longer to come up with something for you.

Ahh thank you for reminding me, I keep forgetting I need that 2nd O2 sensor.

Im actually working on an ODB1.5 - ODB2 swap however as long as you have a 3rd gen 60v6 engine (3100, 3400, DOHC) mated to either the t60 or t65 this should be a farily similar swap no matter if its 1.0 or 1.5. If you have a manual trans a pcm burn can be done for you that could accomdate it but Im not 100% sure about whats involved. I can hook you up with the guy to talk to however.

This is my list so far:

As for the O2 I think Im just going to spoof the 2nd sensor rather than actually hook one up.

Hmmm...you want to spend around 1400 yet you don't have enough for a turbo setup!?!? I am confused. Maybe if you want to go with all completely new parts, but even still, with brand new parts you could put a turbo on it for $1400. Shit my whole car with the factory turbo on it with 69k on it only cost $1800. Find a turbo gp thats in rough shape but still has the turbo setup on it and put that on your engine. Use the computer from it and everything. Then buy a TopGun chip so you can run 12psi and you should gain right around the 80hp you want to gain. Yes, the setup will be about maxed out, but that is a VERY easy way to make that power. Or you could just buy a turbo and make some flanges and get computer work done and make 100+ extra horsepower. Forced induction (turbo, supercharger, nitrous) is the only way to make big power numbers for cheap, and I certainly don't see why $1400 couldn't buy you a nice turbo setup.

Its definately gonna cost you WAY more than $1400 to make another 80hp N/A.
