So I dropped my 3.4 off at the machine shop today, due to the rod knock in my 2.8.
They're magnafluxing and vacuum testing the heads on Monday, but say they can't check the valve guides without replacing them due to the design. Something about the style of retainer?
    Is this true?

Also, should I be getting anything done to the crank to improve oiling?
I have to go .010 under on both bearings probably due to the previous owner's negligence.

As far as the oil pump is concerned, I've read that I must use the pickup tube and oil pan from my 2.8 due to it being a 4x4 motor. Ofcourse I want to go with a new pump, but is there a difference between the 3.4 and 2.8 pumps?

    Thanks!

I have no idea what he is talking about with the heads. If they are iron heads then the guides are the heads. There are no replaceable guides in the iron heads. They can install liners if the old guides are worn.

The crank will be fine. Don't modify it and just make sure they machine it well. .010 under is just fine.

Never use a 2.8L pump or pickup. Even if you rebuild a 2.8L. Melling sells a new 3.1L/3.4L iron pump which is larger than the 2.8L aluminum pump. They also sell the correct 3/4" pickup tube under a 92 Isuzu Rodeo 3.1L application listing. Ed Mc will have the part number.

They are full of it. They just have to check end play on the valve. They are similar design on the retainers to small blocks, if they can do small blocks, they can do the 3.4 heads.

          Thanks for the replies guys.

Turns out 4 of 6 intake valves weren't even sealing with the "varsol" test, much less a pressure test, so when he grinds the seats, that's when he'll find out about the guides, since he uses the guide as an alignment hole for the tool.

He also went .010/.010 on the crank journals. No cracks in anything!
          Pistons aren't scuffed....

So if I get a pickup tube for a Rodeo, they came with a 3.1 in 4x4, that'll work with my 2.8 pan?

Exactly. In fact I used small block chevy Viton stem seals on my intake and exhaust valves. Which I would suggest everyone with iron heads do. Stock heads do not have exhaust stem seals.

As for the pickup tube yes the pan on the Rodeo and 4X4 S-10 are in fact the same GM pan. Isuzu just used the engine from GM and bolted on their engine mounts to fit the Troopers and Rodeos. Get the pump and pickup and bolt it in. The use the pan with some clay on the edge of the pickup screen to set the depth to the bottom of the pan. Don't forget the gasket! Your shooting for 3/8." When done it should be tacked in place. I like to use a TIG welder and some 309 SS rod. But you can use MIG
