I recommend installing a 3400 and obd2 before considering a turbo or SC swap.. I wish I had done a 3400 and obd2 before I built my first turbo kit. But if you want to do either a turbo or SC swap, it'll be several grand.
Swapping a pushrod 3400 would be rather pointless since it barely makes more power, but if I could find a 3400 DOHC and then maybe turbocharge that...it might be cheaper.
Swapping a 3400 and upgrading the cam and valve springs should get quite a bit of power over a stock 3100. And a cam upgrade is relatively inexpensive on a pushrod motor.

Wow, it makes that much of a difference?
I dunno about other cars, but the 3400 fitted to the Chevrolet Equinox was rated at 185 hp, which isn't much more than my 3100.
But if swapping the cam and valve springs produces a lot more power, it would be worth it. I would just have to go hunt down a good 3400...
the 3.4 (DOHC, meaning LQ1) is going to be an interesting installation in a N-body..... i actually don't think anyone's done it before. a 3400, that's been done many times.
1995 Monte Carlo LS 3100, 4T60E...for now, future plans include driving it until the wheels fall off!

Is the LQ1 a radically different block than the normal 3400?
Sometimes DOHC engines are 100 percent different from SOHC/pushrod counterparts (the twin-cam version of my 1987 Nova's SOHC four cylinder was pretty much an entirely different engine), and sometimes the dimensions are pretty much the same. Sure all the plumbing would be different since the N body was never given the LQ1, but it would theoretically fit just fine...

TDC's are HUGE compared to a 3400...

Oh right, I almost forgot the Grand Am had a 3400.
Would probably have to do a little cutting because I doubt the mounts are in the exact same places, but it would otherwise fit like a glove.
it would be a much more strait forward swap that's for sure, and could still make good power. Ben say's that stage 3 3400 heads actually outflow the 3500 heads, so a set of those and a cam, and you could be having some real fun!

Do those require cores? If they do, I would have to buy the engine and sit on it a while until the customized heads get back and then swap it in.
Swapping an engine into your daily driver and then making it non-driveable is pretty silly.
