  • Dual exhaust for 3100 SFI in a Buick Skylark

Is this something fairly easy to do, or does the engine layout and chassis not leave much room for dual exhaust?

My Buick Skylark barely has an exhaust note, and so I'd like to hook it up with a freer-flowing and cooler sounding dual exhaust if it can be done.

You don't need to make a true dual exhaust, but do you want dual exhaust tips?

Either way just putting on a muffler will get your desired sound. There will be no direct bolt on for the skylark I believe but just take it to an exhaust shop and get a flowmaster 80 series or some magnaflow. I'm sure some others will chime in on what sounds good but on my 3400 Grand Am I have a Borla and I wouldn't trade it for anything

the factory dual exhaust setups are faux dual.

they are normally merged right at the exhaust manifold into a single pipe, travel past the fuel tank, then split into two pipes with a muffler for each side. some have a single muffler and split that way.

but either way, it's all purely for looks/sound.

So if I change the exhaust system, I'll get no power whatsoever? I'm confused.

unless you start at the exhaust manifolds and work your way backwards(the factory downpipe is actually pretty bad), don't expect any kind of power gain unless there is some kind of significant restriction in your exhaust (plugged cat or a crimped pipe).

So if I want new exhaust, I might as well get a full system? That's gonna be expensive...

Modifying cars isn't really a cheap hobby unless you have a Honda or something like that. It's all about how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go.

I guess I'll focus on keeping the car in optimum shape first and then, when I actually get a JOB, start tuning the old 3100 up.

Just swapping the muffler is no big deal, not really any gains but it's not always about power...

I'll throw my vote in for the Hooker Aerochamber muffler.
