  • Cryo treating?

anyone have any legit info on cryo treating? I'd like to see some real tests that show the differences between cryo and non cryo. I haven't heard anything but hear-say and want a way to toughen up a few components...

apparently if you cryotreat certain parts of the F40 trans, it holds up behind a LS7 in a fiero.

hard to argue with those results.

to be fair, I don't think "the perfect union" has ever been down a drag strip, or really beat on.

Ya it's always disappointing how some of the craziest Fiero builds never actually get put to the test.

Cryo treatment is unique and effective.

In steel, and other metals, there is a grain structure called austenite through out the metal. Austenite is converted into martensite during the deep freeze process. Martensite is far stronger then austenite, which makes the metal more durable and more resistant to wear.

Austenite is like soft clay and Martensite is like a hard rock. When sanding the metal, the austenite is easily pulled out allowing wear. Martensite is harder to pull out and helps the steel retain surface integrity.

Metals that contain large amounts of austenite will benefit the most from cryo treatments.

I've read a few Fiero builds and its terrible that they never get put to a test

no idea. V8 Archie hasn't disclosed that information. but according to him, last i knew, only 1 F40 has been killed, and that was due to a mistake in measuring for the axles.

Taking V8Archie results and information as credible died for me years ago. Cyrotreating works for brake rotors and their wear, also works on cylinder bores, proven in briggs 5hp engines used for go kart racing. Its great for high wear items, not so sure on items that don't really have frictional wear like a double roller chain vs the stock style chain.

maybe, but fiero guys put some radical engines in front of the F40 and i have yet to see one die on the Pennocks forum.

then again, i don't browse there very often.

There is a difference between swapping in an LS7/F40 into a fiero, and racing an LS7/F40 in a Fiero.

i don't see many fieros being raced these days, especially ones that have more money into them than everything i own.

Ya but what's the point in building an ls7 Fiero if you're not going to have fun with it?? If you're only going to granny drive it around you would probably have just as much fun with the stock v6...

I only asked about cryo treating the DRTC because they will probably never be made again. And would like it to last longer thanks 50k
