so would it best to use the 2.8l flywheel out out a S10 or would it be better to use the 93-95 camaro? I will be using a 9 11/16 clutch. also found out the hard way that the 3.1l camero flywheel is about 2 inches from front to back.

the 2.2l has less teeth on the ring gear from what I've been told. and I dont know if I would need the to go with the lx9 starter or 2.2l to make the 2.2l flywheel work. the 85 and 87 s10's that I have had had a flywheel thinkness close to a inch. hoping to find something newer. all the places around here have a 2 week wait special order(if they can even get them).

I swear the 2.2 flywheel is exactly the same as a FWD flywheel and can be used with any FWD starter like the LX9s. If you use an S10 2.8 flywheel you can use the FWD starter but it will need shimming out.'89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11

First off, you can only use an 88+ neutral balance flywheel with an lx9 unless you're going to get the imbalance weight machined off and balanced.
According to rock auto, an 89 S10 flywheel has 168 teeth and a 14.5" diameter. Which seems strange because I'm not even sure a flywheel of that size would even fit inside the bellhousing (someone correct me if I'm wrong). This seems more like the size of a SBC flywheel.
By contrast the 89 Camaro flywheel has 148 teeth and an O.D of 12.4". Again according to rock auto this is the same flywheel used from 82-95 in V6 F-bodies.
Then we look at an 89 Beretta 2.8 flywheel. Rock auto lists the same flywheel for a 99 S10 2.2L. The O.D. listed for this one is 11.9", so about 1/2" smaller than the 89 Camaro flywheel. Ring gear teeth is listed as 142. This means that in theory the starter would need to be shimmed 1/4" to use the RWD flywheel. I'll post pictures soon showing the difference between the LX9 flexplate and a RWD flywheel.
I can verify that the LX9 flexplate has the same diameter and ring gear as the Beretta flywheel.'89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11

Here is a pic of the LX9 flexplate shown over a 3.4L flywheel:
and a side view:
You can see the flywheel teeth are almost identical in distance between each other, which is why if you used the RWD flywheel shimming the starter would work (Mars shimmed the starter for his 2.8 RWD flexplate IIRC).Last edited by caffeine; 09-11-2012, 01:59 AM.'89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11

grab the bellhousing from a 96+ T5, 3800 car. It'll have the starter pocket on the correct side. The 3800 flywheel is the same pattern as the LX9 but all the measurements may not be, worth checking out though.
Yes, the 2.2 stuff is the same diameter as the FWD. I have a 2.2 flexplate on my 3500 with the 700R4 and a stock gen 3 starter. Works good.

sorry i already have the 94' 2.2l s10 bell and the 94' rwd camaro clutch (9 11/16"). would that big of clutch fit the 2.2l flywheel? and is there any benefit to using the smaller flywheel. I always thought that the lighter weight would be better for auto cross while the heavy flywheel for hard launches. and yes I know about getting rid of the weights. figured I have to hit the junk yard again.

I'm not sure if the fwd flywheel has the same pressure plate bolt pattern but it's worth checking out since new fwd flywheels are only about $50. The two are similar enough in size that I would expect them to use the same pattern.'89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11

If someone could measure the pp bolt pattern on a fwd flywheel you could compare it to the 3.1 flywheel you have to see if it's the same. If the pp pattern is the same I see no reason you couldn't run the rwd clutch.
For the fwd flywheel you could look up 90 Cavalier 3.1, 88 Fiero 2.8, 99 S10 2.2, many others.'89 Firebird, 3500 Turbo, T56, 9-bolt/4.11
