  • 3100 performance

I have a 2000 malibu with the 3100, currently it has 76000mi. I put a magnaflow muffler and a custom air intake on it. I want more power out of it and I know it is capable of it. After the modifications it really picked up power and became a really smooth peppy little engine, but that was 2 years ago and I really want to kick it up a notch.

What performance mods can I do to it? I do not want to swap the engine, I love my 3100!

I am a professional mechanic, but I work on older cars so this new stuff is not my game. I can rebuild it, change internals, or other highly mechanical mods. Head, intake, crank, and cam swaps are easily doable for me.

I have also noticed is the trans seems a little weak for this engine, any advice?

    Thankyou

    Welcome to 60*

I would go to the junkyard and get another topend, and either have them ported, or send them off to be ported, I would also get a cam. once you have everything ready, pull your topend, and swap on the ported good while you swap the cam.

I would consider a 3400/3500 swap before swapping cranks, the 3400 is basically a bigger 3100, and the 3500 is a bigger 3100 with way better heads.

Which top end should I get? I've heard of people doing the 3500 and having problems with it cracking? Where can I get a cam and what size would you recommend?

? not sure what you mean by cracking. you can get a cam from WOT-Tech, it really depends on how much power you want, and what your goals are.

Uppers for the 3400 are the ones prone to cracking (and the large port 3100 for that matter), not the 3500. WOT-Tech had a cam selection service, but I don't know if it's still available. The price of the service was discounted off the price of the cam if you went through them for your cam, but like I said I'm not sure if it's still available.
