  • question regarding cam with 3400 top end

so currently my setup is old 1393 grind (533/533 .206 @.050), with non ported 3500 heads and ported manifolds. im kinda(actually really) disapointed with the time i got at the track. my best time was a 15.2. now i always read that the 3500 stuff is better, but is it really with a cam? im thinking that the drop in compression hurt the power more than the better flow helped because of the cam. question is what benefits will i see going back to 3400 heads and yielding the 9.6:1 compression ratio.

Among misc gauges and appearence things

I'd do some logging and hit up a dyno to see what your tune is putting down or restricting before blaming 0.6 points of compression... Hell going from 9:1 to 10:1 is a theoretical 2.9% increase in power according to some hot rod formulas out there... So cut that in half.

It's gotta be in the tune. I had the same exact car as you and ran a 15.7 on street tires with a cone filter on the MAF.

MPR tune, yup, id say that is the problem. He used DHP, and didn't know how to make a MAF table transition from one value to the next. A bigger cam would help too but 15s is just a shame with those mods.

ben now that im back in florida i may have to take a trip down. i would like to do a bigger cam and the pre 99 chain, with a fresh tune but at the same time im just ready to move on to a different car which is one of the reasons i abandoned the previous build i was going to do. idk. maybe ill get the cam selection service and do a cam with more duration. who knows.

As I tell everyone... Before feeling completely unsatisfied and digging into the motor again... Get it tuned properly. You may change your mind on ripping it apart.

I had been Ben tune my car and I'm still not satisfied. That's why I'm building a new motor.

found a jy 3500 with 90k on it for 200. perfect candidate for a rebuild and swap. now i should know the answer to this but will the 3400 cam work in the 3500. i know ill need to use the tce crank trigger and swap the fuel rail, but my main question is the cam.

Hope you have someone a bit more competent than MPR to do the tune for this one.

We will have our own external trigger setup soon enough.

I haven't seen aaron tune an NA car, but I think he should let me tune his supercharged car. Not hitting PE under low boost is just a recipe to blow shit up. I can only base that opinion on what he has posted on forums regarding his tune.

Even if you don't know how to tune it's way easier for you to have a tuner so you can log and send data to someone and they could make changes and send you back a file to flash... Otherwise you need to meet up with someone to do stuff all the time. E-tuning is not the best but sometimes makes things easier.
