  • HELP! Internal & External Balanced Parts

This is confusing because I don't know what parts are compatible. I have a 3.4 R32 engine out of an automatic Camaro that I am going to bolt it to a five speed T5 transmission. Do I need to do anything special? I don't know how to tell if my engine is internal or external balanced. Also, I have the flywheel and clutch that came out of the same car as the transmission but I understand that there are a few types of flywheels: balanced and unbalanced. Which do I want and how do I identify whether or not I have the correct one? Also, do I want to keep the harmonic balance pulley that was on my engine. I am not using the crank trigger (switching to a distributor and carb.)

    Any help would be appreciated!

A Camaro transmission requires a flywheel from a Camaro application. Any 88+ 2.8L engine will be internal balance. All 3.1L and 3.4L engines are internal balance.

So it sounds like I'm good with the Camaro flywheel. Bolt it up and call it a day???

As long as your transmission if from a Camaro then yes any 88 to 95 Flywheel from a Camaro will work. Camaro T5's were rolled over towards the driver S-10 ones were straight up and down. The two types of transmission do not use the same flywheel even though they are both T5's

That is true, they do use different flywheels, but you can still run a camaro t5 with the stock s10 parts.

I have had 4 different s10's with camaro t5's, my current 94 s10 with a 2.2 has a 94 camaro t5 with the stock 2.2 bellhousing, clutch and flywheel. The part numbers for the v6 camaro flywheel and the s10 flywheel are the same though so it doesnt really matter.

I had a 93 2.8 with an 89 v8 camaro t5, used the stock s10 parts, had an 89 2.5 with a 91 v6 camaro t5 using all stock s10 parts and also had an 85 s10 with a 2.8 with the v8 camaro t5 from the above mentioned 93 s10. I used the stock 85 s10 flywheel with the clutch from the 93 s10. The 85 and 93 were only pulled to do v8 swaps and the 89 I sold to my cousin who is still driving it to this day. And I daily drive the 94 right now.

But you used the S-10 bellhousing? The only issue I see is the Camaro throw out arm and slave cylinder might not reach the flat flywheel of the S-10. So yes as long as you the S-10 bell housing, throw out arm and slave cylinder it should work just fine. Or you need to use all Camaro stuff I would think.

I have a 1984 Camaro V6 T5 backing my 3.1 Isuzu engine, I redrilled the pattern on the Camaro bell housing to rotate the transmission back to an upright position. Not sure why but GM already dimples the location for the new holes. Since I was fabricating a custom transmission mount it wasn't a problem that the tailhousing pad is at an angle. When I was shopping for a T5 it seemed that the S10 T5's had the shifter located alot farther forward than the Camaro T5's. How did you get around that baktrak?

Yes the Trucks used a different shifter location. There are a few people who swapped to Camaro T5's in their S-10 and moved the hole in the floor and changed the console to get a shifter location closer to the driver and use a shorter stick. You could just choose whatever fits your car best.

I hate the stock s10 shifter location, and gearing, which is why I use the camaro units. I cut a hole in the floor and weld sheet metal over the old one, and just use an early second gen s10 console, cut the cup holders out and the shifter fits where the cup holders were. You can also swap tail housing and shift rails between all t5's, if you want the s10 gearing with the camaro shifter location, or vice versa, or a mustang t5 with the s10 location. etc etc.
