  • Thoughs about GM ignition system

So gm decides that waste spark is cool. basically it means you use 3 coils on the 660s to fire 6 cyls. Basically they use use 3 fire signals. Meaning the waste spark always fires the other coil because its connected to the module.

So you can *possibly wire up some LS coils to do the same thing. But you have to pair the trigger wiring for the coils up like GM does with their coils. Like companion cyls. It will statically fire 1 and 4 each time, but its almost the same as waste spark, this way you can you the LS coils instead of that lame module as long as the PCM is what is controlling the fire signal.

    Any arguements?

    What advantage does that give?

Shorter wires and no module to worry about going bad. And less problems with the coils and their placement like on some of the FWD V6ers where they are under the front manifold.

i could see asthetics on a RWD application, otherwise, any 3.1MFPI can re-mount the coil pack on the firewall or by the coolant resovrar

i've actually looked into this quite a bit while researching the 00-up northstar ignitions...

if your PCM has 3 serperate IC outputs, it can be done. dwell is controlled by the PCM, for the classic 60V6 style ICM, you send 5 volts for whatever dwell period you want, then when the 5 volt signal goes away, that's when the coil fires the plugs.
