Lifters pump up with oil pressure so it happens instantly that is if your getting oil to the rocker through the pushrod... If your not getting that then you have an oiling issue, if you are getting that then the issue is with how the lifters were assembled and you have the check ball installed wrong or its not working properly. The fact that you can push down the lifter and it doesn't go hard means you have no oil being locked in the base of the lifter by the check ball.

Fully disassemble a lifter and post a picture of how the parts came out in an exploded view with them being in the proper order, then we can tell you whats wrong or if they are put together wrong.

late for that, but, paper clip, push rod cup, disk, inner cyliner, ball bearing, spring, then the little cup and the large spring. all in that order, and just like on the WOTTECH site. How are the 2 oiling holes suppous to be lined up? i noticed that the inner cylinder has a cut away in it, ahh, fuck it, i'll pull one out and get all dirty again. then you can tell me.

Here, the 2 oiling holes, how should they be from each other 180* apart? 0* perfectly aligned?

This is another video of the noise, if i only hit the throttle you would hear it apart from the idle, when i get this all back together i'm going to check my oil pressure yet again as soon as its running.

The hole alignment shouldn't matter or at least it didn't for mine.

I'm starting to wonder if you actually have an oiling issue...

I've also always primed my motors before starting them... I don't know if that makes any difference.

If it was the valve job, the issue should be universal across all lifters. Maybe use top end cleaner or oil with detergents. Supposing the 4 might have a little coke build up in route to the lifters? Not sure....here are the oiling maps for my 3100. Probably exactly the same for your block too.

I took a more patient reading, and ended up with .087-97 iirc preload, not as bad as .107, but watching that video of how they work I have a better understanding of them, and it would make sence that maybe there is a oiling issue, or that there was, that block got cleaned multiple times by me, and the shop, then me again. And I remember blowing everything out atleast 3 times. All answers will come out this weekend as I'm planning to get it back together, fresh oil, and some tags

Without that distributor plug there you didnt send any real pressure to the lifter galley or anything else for that matter... that is a huge opening that doesn't allow pressure to build at all when not blocked. you need to pull apart a distributor plug and send the hex rod down through the middle of it after its installed to prime properly, and build pressure.

BTW here is a cold start vid of my car, no tapping.

Which is exactly why I got the distributor plug that Dave had at the last meet, and everyone wondered why, lol. That plus the cheapy $12 oil priming tool kit from Harbor Freight makes a nice setup for priming an engine. Otherwise I was running into the problem you mention (no pressure build) with just the stupid little plate they supply in the kit.

This does sound like my car when its cold, im kinda hearing the 'sewing machine' noise from the front, but i did have one lifter not happy regarless.
I'm going to go to the wrecker and get rather a part of a distributor or part of the plug to modify friday evening. I asked a guy at my work if he ran into this problem in his career, and he told me all the time, and he would just put in a new lifter, and to figure out which on it was, he would have the valve cover off and put his hand on each rocker till the noise changed...never thought of doing that.

                      That 3X00 emblem is badass!

I may have to make something like that to replace the RS emblems on mine.. What did you use?

                      Thanks

To be on topic, are you sure that the cups that hold the check ball and spring were all evenly seated in the bottom of the plungers?

Bob, I think your car needs a good old spirited drive. I'm sure those lifters will pump up after pushing 5600 rpm at wot with 100% load on the engine. After all, it is the movement in the system that makes them pump up.

Plus, it is easy to listen hard after working on the engine and suspect something that is perfectly normal. I bet if you paid this much attention to the engine before any mods were done, you just might hear the same noises you hear now.

I don't want you to break something on my advise but if you feel like she can handle a good run, go out and knock the dust off her. Maybe play the Top Gun theme song to add to the mood, lol. I personally love Pantera when I'm in a racing mood.

Thats actually a milled plastic emblem... Eric Wood over on Bnet and on here made it for me... Obviously its using the X from the LSX style emblem since its the same idea with how the engine is built, multiple engines in one Woody came up using the LSX style X in a logo form like that for my car since my SN on bnet is 3X00-Modified.

The plastic is silver coated and when milled down shows up black so thats how you get the different colors on it.

As far as sewing machine sound... thats more of a suction of the intake your hearing since it was cold and running at 1500 rpm... It quites down when at idle and there are no tapping sounds. I know what a lifter sounds like when empty and thats not present on mine. That wasn't the best camera to use either I only had my Inspire to take the vid. I'll try to get a better one with my S5 since the audio will come out much better.
