  • F40 Transmission Clearance

Does anyone who has installed an F40 in a Fiero have a picture or measurement of how much room is on the transmission side of the cradle left to right? Also how much room before the F40 hits the chassis sheet metal? I've heard the F40 is wider then the 282, however have no idea how much cradle real estate is lost or left over.

    According to info on Fiero.nl...

The G6 6 speed is just ¼” longer that the Fiero Getrag transmission. The end of the trans that is the closest to the left side frame rail is larger in profile because that transmission has 3 gear shafts instead of the Fiero’s 2 shafts.
I have read that there can be a slight clearance problem with said frame rail but it is minor...

well, since all the fiero guys are in one place, if we run a FWD trans(F23, F40) would there be anything wrong with running the shift and select cables under the engine and transmission and using the factory cable brackets from the donor car?

It will be reversed... the shift cables come off the back of the shifter in the Fiero not the front as in a FWD car. You have to swap both or neither to keep the shift pattern from being reversed.

He said run the cables under the engine which would be appropriate to run the G6 arrangement as the cables would connect from the trunk side of the Fiero. There's just one problem, the shift cables would have to be extra special as they would need to be about twice as long and twice as thick as stock, to account for the wide radius curve at both ends a thicker cable would require if it's even possible in such a tight space and to counter the additional loose feel that might accompany a much longer cable with the stock diameter.

Isn't that what I said? They would have to come off of the front of the shifter assembly to the rear of the tranny, or from the rear of the shifter assembly to the front of the tranny, else the pattern would be reversed.
