  • Hard Start on a 96 3100 Help!

    Hey guys,
i really need your help with this one. i am working on a 96 GP with a 3100 that has a hard start condition when it sits for a while (10 minutes or more).

Recently, we had to replace an ignition coil (for a missfire) and a fuel pump.

Also, we have been messing around with IAC valves but that does not seem to be it. We bought another valve because we thought we really needed to measure the valve before installing but the new is at 1" out of the box.

Before swapping another IAC valve is there something i should check. I am thinking i should check fuel pressure after shutting down the engine.

Basically, we do not know what is causing the hard start or extended crank time. In other words, why would it take too long to start?

    Thoughts?

    TIA

    UPDATE: failed fuel pressure regulator...

If you replaced one dying coil, the other 2 are probably worth looking at. The coils could be getting too hot during heat soak. I've read about pouring water over them to see if cooling them down resolves the problem.

Need more details. Starter could be hot, leaking fuel injector, bad head gasket, weak fuel pump, weak battery connection.....

the detail i left out was "extended crank". the engine talks to long to start. It will crank a while or more than it should before it can run on its own.

        Start by checking fuel pressure.

Bad fuel pump replacement could have been miss diagnosed by simply having a bad pressure regulator...

Just turn key on don't start it and see what the pressure reads... It should hold around 35-50... If it spikes while it primes then drops right off then the regulator is whats bad.

Well we took a look at it on Tuesday night. we pulled the vacuum line off of the regulator and fuel came out. Thanks for the help guys.

Car runs great after replacing the regulator.
