EDIT: And yes, 3100 heads will fit on a 3.1L bottom end and flow more air, especially on the exhaust side. Im sure there's a how-to on this site on doing a 3x00 top end swap, you'll need to read, cuz its not as simple ans throwing 3x00 heads on a 3.1L bottom endRobby Whitesell

When I did mine (and I pulled the motor), it took me right around 3 days. To do it without taking the motor out, you have to still have a hoist and you need to drop the subframe in order to access the cam from the wheel well. And then, you'll be working in the cramped space of the wheel well the entire time. I'd rather pull the engine and do all the major work while the engine is sitting on a stand with everything easily accessible.-Brad-

I pulled my cam without removing the motor (not my first choice). We removed both dogbones and the lower engine mount on the passenger side. Then using a jack from below the engine, lightly jacked it up and then swung it forward slightly, it was just enough room to get the camshaft out and the new one back in. It was a 2 person job and was like our 3rd or 4th plan to get that cam out.1994 Grand Prix SE 4dr - Brilliant Blue Metallic

yeah the best way is just to pull the engine. you can scrape by and squeaze it through the wheel well. but thats not the best or easiest way to do it.
pulling the engine is the best way.Colin
