  • 2008 LZG damper removal

Has anyone taken the damper off a 2008 LZG or LZ9? They use a stamped steel damper without the normal bolt holes for damper puller.

Anyone attempt a gear puller on the steel hub?

IIRC a 3 jaw puller works. I tried getting mine off with long bolts with washers behind the slots in the pulley. It was an epic fail!

I am still trying to find a jaw puller to get mine off.

I usually have to warm them before they come off. I wonder what tool GM has for it.

The LZ pullies are the same as LX9s and can be removed with a 3 jaw puller. I have always been able to get them off with a cheap Harbor Freight puller. I do stick a short bolt in the end of the crank to protect the threads.

I believe this is the proper tool for the job.

Some places list it as a Chrysler puller, while others list GM/Chrysler. You should be able to rent it at any local auto parts store that does tool rental.

Got it off. Wan't to hard actually. The toughest part was not ruining the threads on the crank since for some reason all but harbor freight pullers do not have a taper on them only a center point. So you have to be careful not to dig into the crank.

I've come across a lot of people messing up their threads when removing the damper and I really don't understand it. If you have any change laying around you can easily avoid trouble. The last time I removed a damper and couldn't find the proper button for it I just stacked a couple quarters over the bolt hole. Much easier than trying to fuss with rethreading it. Hopefully people search and read this beforehand and save some time and effort.
