  • New DTB intake for the 2.8/3.4 V6 - I love it!

Something that I've wanted to have for a long time is a dual throttle body intake manifold for my '85 Fiero. A couple years ago I bought one from a guy that was already finished, but it had a lot of qualities lacking:

Stock intake manifold vs old DTB manifold:

Installed, never worked right for me:

So, long story short I was never happy with it so I took it off, installed the original manifold again and sold the DTB setup to another adventurous Fiero owner. This is what my engine bay looked like a couple weeks ago:

Now I got a local shop near me to take on this project and they hit a home run! It works great, looks awesome and made some decent power. Without doing any tuning the car gained +13RWHP and +25RWTQ!

    New pics:

The manifold is now for sale here:

Sounds like they've sold a couple of these now to other Fiero owners as well.

The car is a lot of fun to drive now, it seemed pretty slow and boring before. If I really want to, now the car will even do burnouts!!

We took the Fiero to a Fiero-Only car show in Frazee a couple weeks ago and everyone thought it was fantastic.

That's very cool. And a decent performance increase to boot. Nice job.

          That is nice

It looks like the old style was probably choking it off where it went from the plenums to the LIM.

New setup looks 100x better, better design too. Curious what TBs those are, I've long thought of modifying my 3.4 plenum to be dual TB, but I always remind myself I plan to swap to 3500 top end which makes it not worth it. That company should consider a 3.4 plenum version.

Having dual plenum on a V6 is a great idea if designed correctly. If you design it right you get a resonator effect that helps force air into the engine by creating a slight pressure increase. It work best on a 3 cylinder engine which is half a V6. It also works well on a V8 because, to the intake manifold, all cross plane V8's look like a 3 cylinder engine with one piston bigger than the other. The resonator works when the air flowing through the throttle body comes to a halt. That kinetic energy is turned into potential energy in the form of pressure. So when the intake valve opens you get a denser charge into the cylinder.

That intake looks sweet. If it was available when I installed the 3.4 V6 in my Fiero, I would've bought that instead of the Trueleo intake. Oh well...

                  Thanks guys

                  Dyno sheets:

Notice on each graph at 4,100 RPM how the air/fuel ratio just drops like a ton of bricks further than the wideband can read. If that got cleaned up and held steady around 12 instead of below 10, there would be even more power gained!

Has the car been tuned? If not, that would really explain the A/F going really rich.

If it's reading a 10 and indeed rich than you might gave less air then before. Which would lead me to think it made things worse.

It's interesting that the custom intake has a dip in the power & torque curves just above 4500 RPM, but the stock intake does not. I wonder if it's related to Helmholtz resonance?

That said, the rest of the graph looks pretty good.

Without proper tuning, there is really nothing to be gained from those results other than that there is a lot more there to get from tuning.

Agreed. But even un tuned the torque gains are impressive. Fix the tuning and you should have something impressive.
