  • How to get more hp from a 1984 stock 2.8l

    Hy there .
When I was younger I had greatest of pleasure blowing off the doors of vettes and company. With my w-30 olds. This sucker had more hp than most people could handel.
Well that didn't last .Woman babies morgage. there went my olds. Now this vehicle came direct from gm already loaded.....I was lucky enough to put my hands on an 1984 Buick
2 door limited apparently issued for the 1984 olympic games in mint condition(real little old lady owner) now Question What would be the best and CHEAPEST way to increase the hp....from 112hp to aprox 300/400hp.....Or is that possible? This sleeper is pretty fast but i am still having trouble with porche and vipers....SURPRISE gray haired old man limps. Why a lead foot...AT my age time is not an option to experiment. So i am
turning to anyone with ideas that work.and help me to get a criminal record for speeding ...........

    Quickest way to 300-400 HP?

    3500 swap, with a turbo.

You could do like superdave and do a big lopey cam, port and polish the heads and do long tube headers on an otherwise basically stock engine and pull 275 to the tires, but the lopey cam and headers won't keep the sleeper effect. But a nice turbo that doesn't spool until you get into it would

Ummm... the stock 2.8 ran high 16 second 1/4 miles and 9 second 0-60 times which wont keep up with 80% of new cars.

I have a 1985 2.8L 4 speed manual. Lots of low end torque, but not fast.

I am putting in a 3500 from a 2006 Pontiac G6. I hope to have 200-210 HP at the wheels running mostly stock. This should give me 6 second 0-60 times and hopefully low 14- high 13 second 1/4 mile times.

Turbo the 3500, tune it, and good headers, ported heads, etc and you could see low 12's.

      $$$ + time = HP

        Hey pocket rocket:
3500 turbo sounds good question any computer gizmoes involved?? and if so ,how much?
Dont forget my powerplant has only an egr as far as antypolution is concerned. And i doo love carburators and timing.I am also somewat concerned about the originality of the vehicle .1984 2door limited issued especially for the olympic games .I wonder how many have survived.I am replacing the radiator its the original the rest is all original the only other parts not original chocks and exhaust

          hey Z3500
Thanks for your input but you say ( I HOPE to) 200/210 Wich is better than 112hp i agree but i did mentione CHEAP .A full engine swap+modifications for 70 to 80 more ponies .I do like the sleeper effect of the turbo. But you are talking of MOUCHO PESSOes
I'de rather buy beer and get bombed with the money your sollution has not fallen to deaf ears Thanks for the reply

{super dave did you say 275 to the tires} on port pollished lopped cam headerred exhaust...Versus a 3500 turboed engine swap for 50 to 100 ponies Wich is easier and cheaper????Having my heads mashined or engine swapped.Anyway the sidewinder exhaus would screw up the sleeper effect anyway.AAAhhh i am getting closer to my criminal record
            thanks

Where are you located, and do you have emissions testing there?

Some on here have bought a 3500 from a junkyard for as low as $250-300. You would need a crank trigger setup from WOT-Tech ($200 and the link is at the top of the forums), and probably a larger fuel pump, injectors and a fuel rail from a 3400. You would also need the turbo, of course. You could get a cheap Chinese knock off turbo on ebay for a couple hundred bucks. You would have to (or have someone else) fab up some exhaust work for the turbo, as well as do the cold side plumbing.

If you need incentive to do this project, look here:

                Hey pocket rocket:
The powers that bee here can't even spell the word Antypolution they only speak French my present location sitting in my chair in front of the computer in QUEBEC on the outskirts of Montreal.....WHAT IS EMMISSION TESTING???Does that answer your question? And don't forget the vehicle is considered as antique more than 26 years old...So i fly by the boys in uniform (THE MAN) and they don't even see me. i have found a place A.R.I.
they seem to specialize in repunching v60's their web site

I should get 200-210 HP at the wheels, which means around 240 HP at the crank. So it is a gain of 120 HP over my old 2.8 rated at 120. Plus my torque ratings will jump from 155 lbs to around 240-250 lbs. And that power is available through much more of the RPM range so it pulls longer. You can spend the $1400 on a performance kit from ARI Engines and still be far short of the power of the 3500. I bought my 3500 for $450 and it only had 30k miles on it, and all the other stuff I needed for the swap has totaled around $1400 including the cost of the engine.

Just look at the size of the plenum. The 3500 is much larger and produces much more power at higher rpms than the 2.8 ever will.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned N20...
