I have a 4 puc with springs right now and a 250% pressure plate and it holds, but I'd rather have a lighter disk even still. The trans. don't like high revs and a heavy disk, it messes up the synchros when you try to jam high RPM shifts.

What you're saying makes sense, syncro's are just speeding up the input shaft, so a light disc is easier to spin up than a heavy disc.

I want a clutch for the street though. this is going to be a daily driver for the most part, so a unsprung 3 puck would be junk for me.

I've been workig this problem for a 3.1 Aluminum head Fiero conversion. I am going to go with a stock pressure plate and a cereramic disc. On ebay the disc is going for less than $70.00. The puck disks say for the 5 speed only, but when I talked to them they say they are 14 spline 9 1/8 inch and will fit the 4 speed, guess I need just a little more knowledge of the difference between the clutch plate on the 4 speed verses the 5 speed. The syncros slow down the input shaft. The physics don't work the other way around.

For street use I've had no complaints with a 5 or 6 puck. To each his own I suppose.

Who are 'they' and which transmission do you have?

I have the muncie 4 speed (1985) on my Cavalier that I am swapping 3500 into. I am going with a spec stage 3. It is $278, and since the 2 is the same price and the 2+ is more, its a no brainer. It says available in 6 puck or 3 puck.

I ment slow down, I'm not sure why I said speed up...

I'm going to be running an f23 5 speed. I just don't want a clutch for 350-400 ftlbs, when I'm only making 215 ftlbs +-

as far as I can remember, the main difference between the muncie 4 speed disc and the 5 speed disc is the diameter of the disc.

                You were thinking downshifting

the principle is the same either way...

Actually it works in reverse for downshifting. The synchros would speed up the disc while downshifting. No need to be a stick in the mud

I was refering to the fact that it's easier for the syncro to change the speed of a light disc be it faster or slower than a heavy disc.

The synchs themselves can't speed anything up.... The cones are friction brakes. The teeth on the blockers can sort of speed up enough to force gears to mesh.

The disc clutchnet has can go beyond 300 ftlbs with a higher force pressure plate. I think I paid $160 for the one in my 282 getrag. I reused a LUK or RAM pressure plate from the previous clutch.

So you are telling me that in the process of the sychros synchronizing the speeds of things by way of eliminating the speed differential between shafts cannot speed something up? If things don't speed up, then how can it synchronize shifts when downshifting?

??? all they are are tiny clutches, they don't care about speed up or down...

if refering to the 5speed getrag in the fiero, then i think the only diffrence is the TO bearing... i can verify that tomorrow.
