  • lightest GM v6

    hello,

Which GM v6 is the lightest with alum heads and block (dry weight) ? If a Buick 215 v8 is approximately 315 lbs then maybe such a v6 would be 280 lbs.

    Cheers !

The only all aluminum V6 is the new DOHC 2.8L and 3.6L.

Otherwise all the blocks are iron unless you go aftermarket. In which case all the V6's can be had with an aluminum block whick inclodes the Buick V6 and the Chevy 60 and 90 degree V6

well, the only aluminum block/head GM V6 from the factory started with the HFV6 series.

can't really comment on weight though, being a DOHC design, they would weigh a bit more than a comparable OHV setup.

technically, gen 1 block, can be a 2.8/3.1/3.4, just have to bore/stroke as necessary. i don't know of any gen2/3 ones...

well for that i remember reading that a 3.1 stroke wont fit in the aluminum block due to the extra casting for strength.

the 3500 (214 CI) is about 350 lbs dressed, iron block with an aluminum top end. All the gen2 and gen3 engines will be about the same although the gen 2 might be a little closer to 300 due to the block having less webbing.

a gen 1 iron head v6 will be a little over 400 lbs dressed

. I did some googling. It seems like Honda's j30a5 v6 engines weigh approximately 230 lbs. I'd like to duplicate that with a 3 litre billet pushrod v6.

                  thanks for chiming in, fellers

Well if you have cash to burn the an aluminum block sheds 50 pounds off the stock block. Then you can use aluminum heads for more saving over the iron motor. Drop some accessories you dont need, use aluminum pullies where you can and you should hit that mark.

gotcha, thanks. This application is for a Chrysler Conquest. The car currently has a G54b motor with an Ogura supercharger. Next up, I'll experiment with a lightweight, 9k rpm ohv v6.

Sounds cool they were neat cars. A 9K redline might be a little much unless you seriously invest in the engine. Turbocharging might be an easier and cheaper way of getting the power you want.
