stock 3400 rod is 591g's, my modified rod is 560g's, and this rod is even lighter at 535g's. all other H beam rods are 620g's and up due to having the small journal and more material, and i've look on dirt modified sites, various forums and so on, at the end of my search for a stock weight H Beam rod i came accross eagles feather weight line, summit didnt carry it in a small journal but eagle lists it, jegs and a few other sites. if i have a lighter rod i should save money on the ballancing by only having material taken off.

    #20 down the list

they say the same weight better price same part #

    even cheaper same weight

Sounds like you'll be spending more then 1,500 on this build. But better safe then sorry.

with your build specs you'll be under the HP limit of the rods by a good margin, keep the RPM's under 7K and it'll be fine.

i want to drive the shit out of it all day long. and with me tuning i would like the sence of security. this is my chew toy.

Yeah, it looks that way, but with spending some good coin on the transmission, and trying to squeeze every in of power out a 3400, and the extra 500 is great insurance. i'm goign to go for it. i'm also thinking i'll bump up my CR. so if later on i decide to make it a hybrid, N02, anything else, everythings layed out, and all i have to do is bolt on parts. that feels good.

Now i just have to figure out if top coating pistons is worth it or not. thinking i'll bump my CR to 11.3:1 so if i top swap its going to be right around 11:1 still.
with the pistons being bare aluminum on the top with out the coating, the ethonal fuel will or could cause corrosion on the pistons...errr, its suppous to keep down heat so theres no pre-detination, but its an aluminum head motor, but, again its a higher CR, and would be running on 91oct, would i be sacrificing much by having the timing retarted to reduce knock? thats how it all works right? new thread? new subject? i hate homework.

Never heard of methanol/ethanol corrosion in this setting aside from what was assumed due to general
incompatibility. The exposure is not long enough among other things. This is why it hasn't been much more
than an assumption rather than an experience in water/meth injection, it evaporates long before it can do
damage otherwise there'd be a lot of ruined turbos and intercoolers, and intake manifolds because they're
aluminum to. Bathing aluminum parts in it for a prolonged period is another circumstance.

Like fuel systems, hence why E85 capable cars need a special fuel system.

then i'd have to get the rod pins bored out and bushed. dont even know if thats practical or possible.

I don't believe they have a special fuel system as most if not all of what's used now is ethanol resistant anyway, stainless steel rails, plastic tanks and PTFE hoses etc. It appears the only difference in the Flex Fuel systems is higher flowing fuel injectors and a sensor to estimate how much ethanol is in the fuel for proper management. The 08 3900 for example shows the same fuel injector for both fuel systems, the 3500 however shows different injectors between Flex (uses the same as the 3900) and non Flex Fuel applications. Some people are using E85 in older forced induction cars but I wouldn't risk it in an 80s or older system that is not being driven on a daily basis.

dont they have lower CR too?

E85 benefits from higher compression due to the rather large increase in octane E85 has over 87 octane fuel.

isnt it less stable at high compression? or do i have that backwards

E85 does allow for more compression because it has a higher octane rating but it also has a much higher refrigeration effect when it vaporizes in the air.

E85 vehicles also have stainless steel fuel lines right off the tank. Gasoline vehicles typically have regular steel lines. Methanol will eat steel and aluminum so stainless is required.

I've always heard seals are different, but moving to PTFE across the board makes a lot of sense. I've also been told if your injectors aren't made for E85 it will eat the enamel off of the windings.
