    i currently have a cam. i believe its 496 lift ex and in.

    to put it simply. it needs a torque converter.

    what is the best cam i can get for power that will not need a TC. anything on wot-tech?

    basically im looking for power, a slight lope at idle, and not needing a custom stall tc. any ideas?

    i wouldnt consider this to rather be a big deal to change, but lock up can be changed through the computer. it would be ideal to change the TC, but isnt nessisary. I'm changing my gear ratio to compinsate.

      What are the other specs and why does it need a higher stall torque converter to work?

        it shakes when stopped in drive and it stalls sometimes going into gear.

          Thats go nothing to do with the torque converter. What are the rest of the specs on the cam? What brand is it and what if anything else have to done to the motor?

            Eh someone told me it was. It's just got everything to support the cam. valve springs, pushrods, lifter springs, yatta yatta.

            and sorry i mistook the lift specs for my 302 cam..this cam is made by comp. custom ground. specs:

            intake = .487
            exhaust = .502
            duration @ .006 = 263 & 275
            duration @ .050 = 212 & 224
            lobe separation = 112

            TIMING:
            @ .050
            Int: 5- BTDC & 37 ABDC
            Exh: 45 BBDC & 1- ATDC

              your TC *Could* be going, but a replacment TC is only around 100$ and if it needs to be replaced just replace it, you'll have to when you pull the motor to do the cam and cam bearings. if you get yours rebuild you can get a better friction disk put in, and i would strongly reccomend replacing your line pressure solenoid and TC Valve, basically get the valve body rebuilt. theres lots of upgrades to do that will help with longevity of the trans and shift issues, also you could turn the line pressure solenoid set screw a 1/4 turn to boost line pressure and firm up shifts.

                No way the cam is your problem, that much I am 100% certain.

                  well the cam has already been installed in the engine. but since recent timing chain problems put a hole in my piston. now the engine is pulled and now im thinking about the TC. someone said a different stall TC would help me out.

                  if your saying that cam isnt enough to need a different TC then what would cause shaking and stalling? maybe the problem will go away now since its going to be a completely fresh engine.

                    Sounds like its still in lock up or partially locked when its not supposed to be. What was the timing chain problem and how did that result in a hole in the piston?

                      timing chain damper cracked in half, caught the timing chain, got stuck in between the chain and crank sprocket, halted the chain, spun the crank keyway right off, so cranks still spinning while cam is stopped and valves are still open, im assuming the action of the crank going 3k rpms and the piston going up and down really fast on a stuck valve was like a jackhammer and put a hole in it.

                      and what do you mean by lock up.

                        Torque Converter Clutch lockup. Its electronically controlled but if its sticking, it will bog the engine at low speed and can cause it to stall. That sucks about the damper breaking. 2nd time I have heard of this happening now, though the other didn't wedge and ruin anything else.

                          how do i fix the lock up because that sounds like what i have because it does bog at low engine speeds.

                          and yeah it does suck. one little $15 part caused an entire engine to fail lol.

                            like i said,atleast getting the valve bodylooked over,boring out the TCC valve,line pressure valve and solenoids replaced, the line pressure sol areknown for going. i'd sooner get the trans rebuilt with new frictions too

                              how easy is it to get the the valve body. can it be done while the trans is still in the car. i dont really feel like ripping it apart anymore to get the trans out.
